I saw him play about 10 years ago in Toledo, Ohio: Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations and the Shostakovich cello concerto that was written for him. He knew both of them to the point that he would close his eyes, and at the end of the Shostakovich, he wanted so much sound from his cello that in the middle of playing he suddenly grabbed his bow in his fist and kept going.
