an empiricist such as john locke might say no, whereas an Berkely, a fellow empiricist would say yes, based on the fact that everything is always being percieved by one being (God). But this question does not emulate perfectly the age old question in which gravity overcomes a tree's ability to stand, because the object that makes the sound also percieves the sound.

personally, i think a scream sounds best when it's sent through a diggereedoo, however that instrument's name is spelled.
