Look, here are the facts for those of you who haven't been around that long:

1.  Believe it or not, I am a Christian.  I didn't say I'm a good one.

2.  I have read the Bible from cover to cover.  No skipping, even the "begats."  From Genesis to Revelation, plus the different books not recognized by the majority of the Protestant churches.

3.  I ( Read more... )

in the news, science, christianity, the bible

This is odd to me. I very specifically remember the late Pope John Paul had already confirmed that evolution wasn't incompatible with the Catholic faith years ago...Okay, the article confirms that it was in 1996. So basically, the only thing that's new is they're saying that they don't think they need to apologize to Charles Darwin posthumously just because the Anglican church decided they (the Anglicans) were mean to him 150 years ago.

Or am I reading something wrong? The article seems to be saying that what has been lacking in the whole evolution/creationism debate IS the Catholic viewpoint, which is that evolution is perfectly compatible with faith, and that Genesis should not be taken literally, as opposed to the more vocal non-Catholic Christian factions who have been trying to force school to teach Genesis as a literal alternative to the theory of evolution.

Yes, yes it does. Which was a catalyst for my written opinion on the whole argument/farce.

So, catch the first entry for the X-E Halloween Countdown?

Hey there anonymous September 17 2008, 10:55:26 UTC
This is Pepe from the X-E board. I followed your link and love the journal. What a great first entry to run into, as I've been arguing the same points you've made for years, especially around the aspect of faith.
Bill Hicks had a great bit about beliefs, not sure if you've ever heard it.
Anyway, thanks for the blog and I look forward to reading more!

1) I think we got off on the wrong foot a few years ago, and I apologize for my judgmental nature.
2) I enjoy reading your posts
3) If you want to talk some Augustine, I’m writing my thesis about him (well, sort of about him. It’s about some of the ideas in his works and where they came from).
4) The Language of God by Francis Collins is a book you might find interesting

Um, honestly, I don't remember you, so if we did get off on the wrong foot a few years ago, consider all forgiven on account of amnesia. But thank you for the lovely compliments!

Now, I fully appreciate your point of view and I'm ecstatic that there are people of faith who still count reason and science as valuable tools. But I offer some points for you to stir in your head ( ... )

Ok, even though I just woke up and know better, I'm going to make an attempt...

I believe something when, after considering the evidence, and coming to a basic understanding, I come to think that it holds truth. What I meant was, it is my personal opinion that evolution is a real process based on limited analysis of scientific data and applied to my reasoning skills.

However... we agree on the points of actual evolutionary theory. I think our understanding of how evolution works is flawed. To me, there is no doubt that animals and plants evolve, but there are far too many missing pieces to the puzzle to answer the question of how and why they do this. Where are the mutated fossils? Where are the mutated humans? Where are the damned super mutant monkeys what can fling poop with their minds?!?!

To me, science does not disprove faith at all. It shows me how much of a miracle life really is.

And you are absolutely right about not focusing on where we've been, but where we're going. Even the Bible agrees with you!
