Loss in the Family

Grandfather Arthur passed away today. He knew it was happening, but...he was ready, he said.

I said I didn't like the man, but...he was very happy to see all of us, and he was able to remember who we were. Father was worried he would still hate him, but...he didn't. I haven't seen Father cry like that in a very long time. They made up after nearly ( Read more... )

Everyone misses you guys here! :( But it's good to hear everything went well. Or, I guess, as well as a passing could go?

So, wait, what's with all this in the family thing? Your parents run stuff like a kingdom or something? That's kinda silly... but who am I to judge, right? ^^

Give Grandma and Grandpa a big ole hug for me!

Things could have gone much worse, yes. Father expected Grandfather to not even look at him, but things went the other direction. His Alzheimers seemed to have temporarily cleared up as well...perhaps his body wished him to have his last few moments be lucid. His funeral was what he wanted, all the traditions were kept. He wanted me to sing "Thaxted", and I managed it despite the tears, somehow.

No, England has its own government and a Queen. Wilkinsons have just been around for a very long time, since the age of castles, and while it could be considered somewhat backward, it's just what I've grown up with. Our clan has a Patriarch who is in charge of family affairs, I'm told Arthur just took the title a bit more seriously than his predecessors.

I will. Father is still in mourning, but with time, he will heal.

Awr... I wish I knew what to say. :(

I always thought that was a little odd. So, like, Grandpa's the boss of the clan now? :D YAAAAY! Let's throw him a coronation party! I'll make a cake!

It's all right, Rikku. Everyone receives the same amount of time: a lifetime, and his ended well.

Father is, yes. I don't think he will be in the mood for a celebration for a while, though, but thank you for the thought.

I'm terribly sorry for what happened with your grandfather. I would have commented sooner, but there's a baby in the house and she seems to like me... am I tired? Very much so...

And I'm rather... perturbed by the whole "added to the list by the patriarch" thing... You really don't need to go through something like that. I'm sure it's unnecessary trouble. Your father thinks of me as his son, there's no need to go through official channels for it.

Are you like the mob or something?

It's all right, Balthier. You have your daughter to watch over, we understand. If you would like a day off from her, you know very well any of us will take her for the day and let you rest.

We do, though, Balthier. There are certain family heirlooms that cannot be passed to anyone but a Wilkinson, and if something were to happen to Father, he would want you to be able to receive what you would be willed.

No, we're just rather odd. There have been some patriarchs very long ago who instated traditions that have persisted for some time, and as of yet, no one has bothered to challenge them.
