The teacher was late - very late - to Kiku’s dismay. He was a patient guy; nevertheless he wanted to learn English literature better since Japanese literature was starting to bore him anyway. More than five minutes had passed since the last bell rang and there was still no sign of their English teacher - or an announcement from another teacher that would say that their English teacher had taken a medical lift and they were free to do what they wanted to do ( ... )

Arthur's eyes flashed across the pages, his lips moving slightly as he read. Nearing the end of the page, he turned it over and glanced up once around the room. Just as he was about to look down, he noticed the boy next to him was looking at him. He frowned, shooting him a sidelong look. He tried to go back to reading, but with the feeling that he was being watched, he couldn't concentrate on Miss Havisham and Pip, or how exactly Dickens used that particular phrase to create all the tension and confusion in young Pip ( ... )

Arthur looked up and saw him looking at him, so Kiku turned away as if he was drumming his fingers out of boredom on the table he sat on. Surely the blond British boy wouldn't think that he was disturbing him but simply looking at him?

His friend closed his book in annoyance and Kiku turned to look at him. Yes, that guy was probably mad at him.

"No- Not really," Kiku said, his voice unable to come out knowing that he had somehow accidentally upset his classmate. He felt bad the other boy was yelling at him.

"No, I'm not. And you can just continue reading, and don't mind me," Kiku said with an apologetic look. "I was just bored, and curious to see how you're so interested in reading this book full of words."

He looked down, at his shoes, feeling uneasy.

Arthur tutted disapprovingly. He didn’t like generalising or marking people as this type or in that category, but it was so hard not to.
And the lad was really asking for it.

“Books tend to be full of words. It’s one of the major features of books and novels, and something that sets them apart from, say...picture books. Shall I repeat that for you?” Arthur said pleasantly, sarcasm dripping from every pore in his body.

He doubted that the boy read a lot. If a person was surprised that someone could read books full of words like Great Expectations, then that generally meant that they were stupid, illiterate, American or uncivilised. Or perhaps all three.

“I’ll only continue reading if you stop looking at me. I doubt you even read, anyway,” Arthur sniffed, hands placed on the book as though it was a young child and he was the mother, cradling it from any negative auras of jealousy, stupidity, illiteracy and uncivilised manners of the boy next to him.
