I went out front tonight to do a little yard work. I was chatting with my neighbor, who came over to introduce herself.  I wasn't paying much attention to the ground and some ants crawled up my pants legs and bit me about 5 times.  That stinks because usually I react to them, so probably tomorrow I'll have some large knots on my legs.   Ants are no ( Read more... )

Ugh! I have been bitten by ants a few times when I lived in Brazil and it was horrible. Hope your reaction isn't too bad.

These must be a different kind of ant that I have been bitten by in recent years, because so far there hasn't been a bad reaction at all, just some minor itching! Sometimes when I get an ant bite my whole leg or whatever will swell up for weeks. I have a scar on my ankle from where an ant bit me and it turned into a huge welt that lasted for a few weeks. I had to get some cream to put on it but when it went away it left a permanent scarred looking spot on my ankle. Weird.

I am spider food. I don't know why they like me. I feel for you.

Do you have to drive your son to soccer? I ask because I am curious when I played baseball I just walked to practice. I don't remember parents ever coming to a practice. Quite frankly I don't remember anyone coming to a game. The only adults were the umpires and the coach from either team.

Yes, we have to drive him to soccer. The team he is on is through the city rather than the school. When he plays school sports we don't drive him, or go to the practices. With the city, they hold the practices at different parks around town. The one we practice at is about a 5 minute drive from our house, depending on traffic, or sometimes a little more. I stay and watch him practice, along with a handful of the other parents. The kids have all been on the same team for a few years so it is the same boys, but fewer and fewer of the parents are staying for practices now that they are older...lots of them just get dropped off and picked up. I think it is fun to watch and I feel like the kid is growing up too fast anyway, so it is something I enjoy.

Baseball and swimming were two sports not connected to school back when I took part. All other sports were school based.

I just wonder if kids today get to spend anytime with other kids doing an activity other than school without parents be in attendance.

Going to group activities without the observance by their parents seems like an opportunity to be free. Sure there is an adult there in the form of coaches and refs as they are young kids but parents just seem to in many cases overly inserted in their children's lives.

I loved going to baseball and band and the swimming pool and youth group on my own.

I think measured opportunity for independence and self sufficiently builds confidence and demonstrates trustworthiness that parents could use to see their kids ability to make good decisions and garner support for both parties.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I see it both ways here and with the things my son does. The school practices aren't attended by the parents, but the city ones seem to be, particularly at the younger ages. The youth group at church has no parent attendees, unless their parent happens to be teaching. I try to find a happy medium, but of course we all stumble..
