Ejections: Bob Davidson (1)

Apr 12, 2011 20:55

HP Umpire Bob Davidson ejected Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson for arguing a swing call in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Cardinals-Diamondbacks game. With none out and two on, Diamondbacks batter Miguel Montero attempted to check his swing on a 0-0 curveball from Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter. Replays indicate Montero did not appear to ( Read more... )

The video is up now at MLB. It is difficult to tell because they never show any replay from different angles, but I would think it looks incorrect. I love the comment the one announcer makes "That was big league"

First, I'd like to know why I have -3 points, and everyone else -2 for the same call. Secondly, check swing calls are very subjective. Unless a batter keeps the bat on his shoulder, you're always going to have a difference of opinion. After I looked at the MLB video, it looked like he didn't swing, but the third YouTube video showed something different. I think we're all being fooled since he pulled the bat back so quickly. It doesn't matter how far the bat goes; the umpire has to judge intent.
I'd like to challenge the quality of correctness.

The scoring question is answered by UEFL Rule 4.a., specifically:

"2 points for each ejection by a primary MLB umpire," "1 point for each ejection by a secondary umpire," and "minus 4 (-4) points for each ejection occurring as a result of a player/coach arguing an incorrectly ruled call by the ejectee."

To break it down, for MLB ejections, there are four possible point awards for Primary Umps and four (different) possible point awards for Secondary Umps. Secondaries always receive one fewer point than Primaries, which means their negative values have more of an effect than a Primary's would.

Primary AAA: -2, 0, 4, or 5.
Primary MLB: -2, 0, 3, or 4.
Secondary: -3, -1, 2, or 3.

This ruling has been challenged.

After review, the Quality of Correctness has been upheld. The call is now incorrect.

Upon initial examination, the appeal call appeared to be incorrect.

Upon further examination, including examination of the replay and real-time play, the determination of upholding the original Quality of Correctness was made. Upon further consultation of the initial play, it was apparent that the batter did not attempt to strike the ball as it prepared to enter the strike zone. After viewing a reverse angle shot, it is apparent the batter successfully checked his swing. The call is in no way obvious, nor can any video evidence be found to reverse the call, nor find it inconclusive.

Denied.

THANK YOU for posting the Youtube video with other angles to confirm that he didn't swing. Quick! Everyone watch before they take it down.

Are you seeing another video? There's no other angle on the one posted. But we did get to see why Gibby will get a nice fine.

The 3rd video that is on Youtube is a non-broadcast video from a fan behind home plate. It gives us another angle. We actually see the ejection from Davidson in the 3rd one.

Kirk Gibson says, "You need to f***ing retire, old man!" Davidson replies and then Gibson says, "Oh, F**k you", before leaving the field. That is Big League because I can read Davidson's lips with a couple of F Bombs.

Two more awful calls by Bob Davidson. Those two swings weren't even close, and he didn't take the time to check with the 3rd base umpire. I'm amazed that MLB continues to put up with such incompetence. This guy doesn't belong in the big leagues anymore.
