Thank Goodness for seam rippers...

I'm making another dress. The skirt is comprised of 7 pieces.  3 for the front and front sides.  And 4 for the back and back sides.  Guess which ones I sewed to the wrong bits?  Yup, the back sides, with 3 seams to rip out.
I've got to get crackin' on making the dress I'm wearing to Matt's grandma's birthday party in May, but it's a knit and I'd ( Read more... )

Speaking from experience...the prom dress probably needs to be hemmed by hand in order to lay correctly. I think you're doing the right thing saying no, especially since you have let her know quite clearly that you're not a seamstress (though you're learning!!). Get ready for it...everyone will ask you to do/make/repair for them now!

So I've noticed! My boss asked if I could do zippers, and another coworker asked me to make a welding cap for her boyfriend... I'm all for new projects, and trying different things in order to learn, but I just don't want people expecting too much! I did offer to try to make the welding cap for my friend's boyfriend though, and it was actually quite easy. The boss, and zippers... Well, I don't like her enough for that, lol

It really never gets better, though I have gotten better about saying no after putting my foot in my mouth a couple of times. I once agreed to do some alterations for a friend's mom on the understanding that she'd pay me. She ended up giving me $5 for altering three pair of pants...and thought that she was being generous! NEVER again!

$5 is crazy! I'm actually having a hard time with trying to figure out what I should charge my friend for making the hat. Obviously, she already knows she has to pay for the fabric, but she insists on paying me for making the hat. She told me to just tell her what I wanted, but to make it reasonable. Trouble is, I have no idea! I agree that my time should be worth something, but at the same time, I like sewing for the fun of it... But, if I don't charge anything, I set myself up for being taken advantage of, like that lady did to you!
