Very beautifully written and I think it's rather poignant how it ended with both parting like that. Jack is being all noble and not taking advantage and James, while miserable, cannot break his dignity/honor that was so hard-won back. I really think it would be interesting to imagine James' thoughts about what just happened and for him to do some soul-searching...leading to the conclusion Jack had understood, even as he understood Jamie's inability to give it.
I'm thinking along those same lines right now, and, while I can't make any promises, it's definitely something I think I'd like to pursue. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, and very kind, review.
