Lately there's been freaky news all about: Global warming crises, the bees dying... I was reading in the paper today that Asia is facing heavy food shortages in the future if action isn't taken immediately to prevent climate change. And apparently bees dying will result in the eventual death of humans? (I just heard someone say, I didn't do any ( Read more... )

It's not that the bees died, that's the crazy part.

There is absolutely NO trace of them WHATSOEVER, so nuts. It's a global thing, too. Some have said it may have to do with wasp competition, but the fact that it is global makes that INCREDIBLY unlikely.

I'm VERY curious to find out where those bees went.

In regard to everything else you said, I pretty much agree. There is way too little long term thought going in on regard to modern technology.

haha, it's perfectly okay. :)

It's Asia as a whole, not just China, though. If you were mistaken.

I believe the Mayan calender says 2012 is not so much the END of the world as much as "The second coming" when the gods are supposed to come back. Some people just jump to conclusions saying it means the end of the world, but it very easily could be them coming back to give us what I call "Enormous boost to human advancement #2", as they did with the Incas, Egyptians, etc :)

It is also believed that the proliferation of cellphones has messed with the bee's navigation systems.

Although I'll likely get a lot of shit for saying this - global warming alarmism is the latest fad in the media. I'll link you to a post I made in a debate on my LJ about this:

I disagree with you on your "we're not running out of oil" sentiment. Crude oil prices aren't at 60+ dollars per barrel without reason. That's one statistic to consider. Another is oil output, which Hubbert peak theory predicts will peak in the next few years. (Although, I guess you could argue that Hubbert peak theory was wrong: it was off in its prediction of America's oil production peak - we actually peaked in 1971, not 1970 as predicted, regardless, we have declined steadily in production since.)

You're right though, ten-fifteen years is too pessimistic a figure for oil depletion; we've got thirty-five-ish years before we're near depleted. Meanwhile, we'll see production rates fall and prices go up.

Thank god the administration sees this and are pouring money into ethanol and hydrogen research. Hahaha. That money would be better spent researching wind, solar, and wave power or on a positive PR campaign for nuclear energy.

I, for one, am glad to see hydrogen fule cells finally getting some attention. If we insist upon having giant machines to cart our asses around, hydrogen is about as clean as we're gonna get.
