There are some things I don't get that the majority probably understands. Like drinking soda, especially on a regular basis. I don't see the point in spending money on something that's not beneficial health-wise (really the opposite), and I think it's especially impractical to be doing regularly. I'm sure you're getting plenty tons of sugar in ( Read more... )

Don't worry, I don't get it either. Maybe on special occasions, like at a restaraunt or if that's the only thing available, but every day? They just leave me feeling like I need to drink more, it's very unsatisfying. Plus, if you've ever noticed they kind of make your teeth sizzle!

Yes, I understand about carbonation: it just boggles my mind that it's strong enough to do that.

Your tastes may extremely vary from someone else. People like carbonated beverages because they're fizzy. Fizzy beverage usually means soda or beer.

You might not realize this but people don't always do things that are good for you. Why are you racking on drinking soda instead of something more useful and that kills people... like smoking.

Why do you feel the need to criticize people for something so benign? That's like asking people why they'd spend money on anything other than Rice and Water and vegetables to eat. I'm pretty sure you were drinking strawberry milk yesterday when we saw you and I'm pretty sure that's got almost as many calories and sugar as a can of pop...

Good point, I didn't think about that when I made the post. And yeah, everyone does things that are bad for them, I'm no exception.

Sorry to be a critic of people's preferences/habits, it's just something I really don't get and it's just been a burning question I've been dying to ask. Figure it'd help me gain more perspective/understanding on this. I do think drinking it to an extent is disgusting, but I'm not going to stop anyone. :P

I don't agree with that point.

I'm certain drinking soda in large amounts contributes to crappy diseases that you have to deal with for the rest of your life and perhaps a higher possibility of death. If that's the case, for me the significance of the topic is up there with smoking (and ironically, I just came across this article). And I think it's more interesting to bring ( ... )

No, Phylicia, I don't drink soda either anymore. It's fucking terrible.

do you drink beer? and other alcohols?

fatass_mcgee October 27 2007, 22:51:56 UTC
Sparingly. Like once a month. And not shitty beer that contains either high fructose corn syrup or caffeine. The thing about sodas is that they are incredibly addictive; chalk that up to HFCS. Coffee and and energy drinks are jokes too, all it does is get people into a cycle of relying on energy that is unnatural and unnecessary ( ... )

That reminds me, why aren't you harping on people that drink tons of alcohol every weekend. I'm 100% sure that will kill them a bit faster than drinking pop regularly... Considering liver failure and drunk driving are killing people a lot more often than sugar overdose... Sure there's diabetes... but soda isn't the only thing you can get that from...

Well the difference between the two topics is that the reasons for drinking and effects on health are pretty well known. The reasons for drinking soda weren't really clear to me and I didn't understand the benefits.

I guess you don't need to be benefited to like something. Like it was said before, lots of people do things that aren't good for them, its a choice everyone makes.

Water: Quenches thirst, good for your body, not unhealthy at all
Alcohol: Makes you have fun, unhealthy, taste is debatable
Soda: Doesn't quench thirst, canned soda increases risk of Alzheimer's, while soda in general increases risk of diabetes. Does not lead to any sort of fun, and really has absolutely zero advantage other than "but dude lol it tastes good".

My point? Soda is illogical. Alcohol is kinda foolish, but at least has a clear reason. Soda is just downright fucking dumb. It's purely a habbit, there is no benefit over water (though one could say alcohol does for partying).
