I read this in the Environmental Building News 9/07 issue yesterday, in an article about how the energy used to travel to and from buildings can easily overcome any energy savings by the building itself if it's in the boonies

Well... I was going to try and say something clever about how the auto industry has made it almost necessary for each American to own a car such that they can drive from their suburban sprawl-expanding homes out to the sprawling industrial parks for their meaningless jobs and other such bleak nonsense... but I couldn't get the joke to work without sounding totally insensitive to the problem... so there you have it.

hmmm... as evil as they are, I don't think we can blame them for everything.... I wouldn't call the automobile the root cause of all this, but it certainly has facilitated/enabled sprawl, even encouraged it.
Meanwhile I work on a new school in what will be the next big not-terribly-urban suburb of the city, for all those kids whose parents will move there looking for that car-facilitated lifestyle. Yay.

At least you're working on a project that living people will use. This year I've been drawing mausoleums. (Of course, the nice bit is that I don't have to worry much about egress... it's not like the occupants are going anywhere.)

Meanwhile I work on a new school in what will be the next big not-terribly-urban suburb of the city, for all those kids whose parents will move there looking for that car-facilitated lifestyle. Yay.
