Why is it that in this day and age, someone is SUPRISED that people would get upset by a Speaker of the HOUSE of Kansas would call the First Lady by a racist term like YoMomma

Because he's an asshat. Because he was "just joking." Because it was "private email." We could play defense from insult bingo all day long here.

Apparently one of his friends didn't care for his sense of humor, for certain...

But yeah, the young man who was confused used the Just Joking excuse, so I pointed out that if I called him a dickhead, Idiot, useless excuse for a human, he would not think it was funny when I later said I was just joking...

I was under the impression that Yo Momma jokes were started by black people and then spread to the culture at large. My and probably a lot of other people of my generation's first exposure to them came from the early 90's movie White Men Can't Jump where the black characters are depicted passing the time by telling such jokes. I don't know what the speaker said so I don't know if it was racist but I've certainly never heard of the joke itself being called racist, unless maybe you're doing the "Yo momma so black.." variation.

By this logic the term "gutter slang" is racist since it implies wherever African-American dialect is spoken to be a gutter by default.

When used to mock the black people, yes, Tyree,it is racist. Much like most Amerinds these days concider the old western way Indians are depicted, (How, or Squaw and such) as racist. Just saying the words? Dumb, but not racist. Saying the words in reference to someone? Racist.

I've never heard it used by white people to mock black people. It is, however, very discriminatory against mommas. What exactly did the Kansas government fellow say anyway?
