Tornadoes, and slums

Today I got to see a good sign of humanity worth saving.

Yesterday a tornado went through the worst of the slums in my town. Oaklawn. This place was built in the 40s ish to house WWII aircraft workers for Boeing, and because the aircraft folk moved on into real housing, and the poor moved in, the houses were never torn down and replaced with ( Read more... )

It's the people who have the least who are often willing to do the most. I'm glad it held true today.

Great to hear of such experiences. But I think you'd find the good holds true for lots of socio-economic situations. We live much of the year in Vero Beach, Florida -- and took a huge hit in the '04 hurricanes, and everyone coped magnificently!

However, last week, in suburban Virginia we were again in the midst of huge storm damage. The reactions were quite similar: everybody pitched in, everyone commiserated -- all the usual anonymity just dissipated in the face of concrete needs. We're BETTER people than we sometimes think we are!
