Class warfare

Feb 27, 2012 08:58

Just wanted to spread awareness about the latest clash between the 1% and the 99%, involving a wealthy banker leaving a 1% tip on a $133 bill; worse, he scrawled "GET A REAL JOB" on the receipt. Read more about it hereClass warfare has risen to the forefront of American politics after the Occupy protests rose to prominence across major cities ( Read more... )

If people weren't waiters and waitresses, no doubt these 1% assholes would be complaining that they had to serve themselves.

I'm sick of these self-righteous wealthy bastards bleating "class warfare" the second someone mentions raising their taxes. It also pisses me off that the Republicans haven't done anything in Congress about job creation, so how exactly are these people supposed to get "a real job"?

"If people weren't waiters and waitresses, no doubt these 1% assholes would be complaining that they had to serve themselves."

^ I agree completely. I think there is a huge amount of pride to be taken from being a waiter/waitress! A big problem for today's generation, at least in my opinion, is that we have been taught to undervalue labor-oriented jobs or jobs that pay the minimum wage. I know my mum was always telling me to study hard so I didn't have to work at McD's. But what's wrong with working at McD's? Sure you want to aim for something higher, but those who do work there to make ends meet have my respect. Haha, this turned into a bit of a ramble, sorry about that!

It's so ridiculously difficult to find a job these days *__*

1. The banker is an asshole and would have done that regardless of anything else.
2. I never get the idea of class warfare. To me, it always seems to resolve to name calling and bickering, making both sides looking bad instead of focusing on the issues and making things better for EVERYONE.
3. I dislike the Occupy movement. In Pittsburgh they abandoned their camp every single night, not even truly camping out. When I read their demands, though they might have changed as it was far earlier into it, they were unrealistic and would devastate so much of the economy. About the only thing I agree with is to make elections more transparent. Then there was reading about just how filthy most the camps got and seeing pictures...

The banker was definitely an arse -__- Thanks for the insight on the Pittsburgh OWS movement, I didn't know that.

I have so many FEELINGS about this topic that it's hazardous for me to explain my opinion. Suffice to say, it infuriates me when people pass judgment on why others are less fortunate.

I love the Occupy movement(s) for making this a conversation. However, have I joined them? No, because I'm too lazy and comfortable. I've been yelling for revolution for years, but if it ever came, I'd be hiding under my bed. Crying.

Great use of Hogwarts's motto, by the way. Aaaand, Renly icon.

<3 I finally found a Renly icon. Even though looking at it is bittersweet q_q

Oh the big problem with politics in my opinion is that it makes people have so many feelings XD It's hard to discuss things when your future has a direct stake in the outcome/you are otherwise emotionally invested. A part of me seeks university in Scotland as a refuge from the American madness, I think XD

1. I don't think any perfect model of government exists, unfortunately; I do think that the drawbacks of capitalism are less disastrous than say, communism (which is also built on false idealized notions of human nature). Because the U.S. has a mixed economy (free market economy + government purchases etc.) I don't think we're so strictly capitalist, just like China's not strictly communist if you examine their economy as well ( ... )
