  As a person who has been blind since birth, I have countless examples of a back that gets bent, but does not break. It gets quite a bit of riding, but straightens up again, only to repeat the entire process again and again ad nauseam. It is a large part of what life is made of if you are a woman with a disability. Your story is really inspiring, especially for 1981 - but then again you sound tough as nails! The "crisis whorehouse" killed me. I am trying to figure out a way to use that phrase in conversation now...

Thank you for that. I am saddened that it is still necessary far to often. Sometimes, I'm amazed at the progress the human race has not made.

As a teenager, I remember reading a book called One Step at a Time about a student who is diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and begins calling a crisis hotline. Eventually she goes to meet the counselor she usually talks to and discovers the counselor herself is blind.

I think the phrase we have for that now is, "feature, not bug."
