It was the summer of 1972. It was incredibly hut and humid as it can be in west Michigan in August. The only cool place was our dirt basement. When I was younger, I also wondered if it were possible to use a fridge to cool the house, luckily, my dad knew a bit more and promptly explained to me that it generated more heat outside than cool inside, and if we were to leave the door open, it would only make matters worse.
