good weekend.  lazy, in a good way.  my previous funk seems to have passed, as they are wont to do.  i wish it was possible to make that happen faster, but alas.  nothing is fundamentally different, and i think there looms stressful living situations next month, but im going to try to keep my chin up anyway and keep one hand on the pile of ( Read more... )

no, you're right, a fair chunk of new media art is utter self-indulgent junk.

but i think we have to get through the junk phase to get to the good stuff. i mean just think of all the awful crap that must have come between early cave paintings and like the Sistine Chapel, for example. the only difference is that good paint was probably a lot harder to come by than a laptop and camcorder.

I don't know much about art, but what you are saying makes a lot of sense to me. Especially about the tool not being its use.

Take heart re the job postings. That largely represents the fact that stodgy departments are waking up to the idea that this stuff is going mainstream, and don't want to loose all the budget for it to the Communications department. The "New" media in question are all decades-old, but now they've noticed they need teaching posts in them to seem competitive and modern.

As for the preponderance of crap, there're of course the usual two factors in play. First, the lower the barrier of entry in terms of cost and difficult skills, the more mediocre work will be produced. Second, the crap-filter of history has yet to be applied. I'm sure there was no shortage of deeply lame sonnets written in the Tudor period, but nobody bothers to re-print those.

What kind of revolutions are you talking about? Marxism is a relic (in my very less than professional opinion), and revolution a term that is all too easily projected onto change in general.

Hey Drew. Jeff asked me to write you (he had to go to work) but I've realized I don't have your email address. He wants to let you know that he'll be by tonight or tomorrow to get all remaining last items and to drop off his keys.
