While looking for apartments in Atlanta, I had to leave my driver's license at the front desk at every single place I looked at. I also had to buy renter's insurance (which at likely like liability insurance) at every place I considered. I think these practices are just becoming more common, especially in certain cities. Also, many places did try to pressure us into making quick decisions with waved application fees or temporarily reduced rent. It's a very shady process and is often pretty underhanded it seems, and this was across the board at the places I visited in Atlanta. Well good luck!

All of the stuff EXCEPT the centipede are things I've encountered at other 'managed' properties--that is, ones managed by companies. So the only thing I'd consider abnormal is the centipede... but that'd be enough for me to cross it off my list :)
