How much bigger than normal does an animal have to be to be truly frightening? Not normal scary, like "Oh, there's a bear! I want to get away from here ASAP without attracting it's attention," but "I don't think that's natural and it might even be a demon or something," about to descend into panic frightening. Perhaps it was a large than life demon cat that was turned into stone as per all the best folk tales.
I've thought that about alarm practices too. We have an alarm that warns us of impending doom (mainly in case there is ever a major incident at Sellafield Nuclear Power Station in England - about 50 miles from us), and it has occurred to me a couple of times that if anything major happened on the first Saturday of the month we would all ignore it.
