I get the feeling that I say this every August, but OMG the cicadas are SO LOUD this year! I was driving home tonight with the windows rolled up and the radio on, and I could still hear them buzzing in the trees all along the road. I should turn 40 more often!
You guys - I'm turning 40 this week. Apparently I'm supposed to be freaking out about this, but I'm not. At least - not yet. Who knows, maybe I'll wake up Thursday morning in full midlife crisis mode. But this milestone has been impacting my life in an unexpected way.

I think I've mentioned before that there's a flock of geese that likes to hang out near my apartment complex. I like the geese - they can be noisy and messy, but I think they're cute. I get along pretty well with them - they sometimes hiss if I come to close to their goslings but for the most part they just waddle out of my way and give me the ( Read more... ) -

I know I said I'd post last week about my friend Oi Yin, who died recently of pancreatic cancer. I actually started a post and had to delete it because it just sounded so bitter. I was angry, and really just couldn't get past that. It's just a terribly unfair situation for her family.

Attack of the killer zucchini!
One of the guys I work with has gotten into gardening and sometimes brings in herbs and tomatoes for me. This week he told me his zucchini plant was out of control and asked if I'd like some. I said sure - I love zucchini!

A scary movie is not an effective distraction after all
I got some very sad news yesterday - a friend of mine died. It wasn't unexpected - she'd been sick with pancreatic cancer for over two years - but that doesn't make it much easier to accept. I'll write a post about her later this week - right now I'm still too upset to come up with anything much more coherent than "Cancer sucks!" and "Seriously ( Read more... ) -

A Confession
I was invited to another department's holiday party at work last week, and they were having a White Elephant gift exchange. I've heard the White Elephant called by a few different names: Yankee Swap, Chinese Pollyanna, Dirty Santa, etc. Basically, everyone brings a wrapped gift and everyone gets a number.
