So sad...some of my best high school/college memories are from freezing my ass off with a picollo at football games. So much hate. ;-)

Yes, yes, high school memories of freezing my arse off with a trombone, wondering if that mouthpiece would end up freezing to my face a la A Christmas Story. Good times.

"It takes a freakin' three hours for an hour to pass. How stupid is that?"

It's called capitalism, haven't I told you this? How else are the hard-working American corporations supposed to be inundating the consumers with advertisements if there are no time outs?

No, because they did that in high school football too.

Well yeah, to train them, of course.

All sports have some sort of timeout or time "divisions" though. The clock is stopped more for football than say, soccer because it's more of a strategic game, like chess. Except the pawns tackle each other.

I think you hate football just to hate football...

The college I graduated from, UNC-Greensboro, has never had a football team, possibly because up until the early 60's it was strictly a women's college. The big sport there is soccer, and I don't think football is missed much at all.

I just discovered this turn of events and can honestly say I've never been prouder to be a Viking. I've just found a number of forums with people complaining about it and trying to rally support to "save" football at WWU. I believe I speak for the vast majority of Western students and alumni alike when I say "good riddance".

I do have fond recollections of high school pep band, but I never bothered joining the Blue Crew. I attended one game at Civic Field but I honestly cannot remember if it was soccer or football (I brought a book). The lack of enthusiasm about football was one of the major deciding factors in my choosing WWU.

Regardless of what anyone wants to say about stereotypes, most football players do not perform well acedemically (shocking, I know). My suitemates freshman year were both football players and certainly not the sharpest tools in the crayon box. I applaud the decision to prioritize acedemia, the arts and music of Western over sports.

I feel exactly the same way as you (excepting fond recollections of high school pep band). WWU finally makes me proud!
