Mostly, being a business owner, means I need to keep things locked away. But, I'm tired of not writing or sharing because of it. Also, telling several people the same story, over and over is tedious and time consuming, but I want my friends involved in my life.
Suggestion for writing more often: pick a platform that's easy to access at any time. I don't use LJ as much anymore, for example, because Google Buzz and Twitter are far easier for me to quickly jump into whether I'm at home, work or mobile.
Filter-wise, start broad and trim away as needed, IMHO. If all you want to do is write with a minimal sense of privacy, just stick to posting Friends-only for now. Fwiw, about the only filters I use beyond public vs FO is a locale-centric filter (Seattle-only, Atlanta-only) and a few game-specific filters (EVE online-only, etc).
I haven't used LJ in a while for some of the same reasons. Truth be told, I'm not sure how much I will use in in the future. I have Facebook and Twitter (I'm on your twitter feed, but I rarely post). I think my biggest reason for taking up LJ is the reason its semi-inconvenient for you.
I just want more space to express my thoughts is all.
