Gluten-free pretzel (marzipan figure bone) substitute?

So... I was talking to the friend whose wedding is this June. Her style is generally very simple and clean and crisp while still being feminine, so I was sort of expecting that the cake would be much more clean-cut and unassuming and quieter than most previous cakes, which I would be okay with despite my dear love of doing wacky things in ( Read more... )

candy sticks? you know, the hard candy ones that come in different flavors?

it would definitely be weird under fondant, but it would be hard enough. i can't think of anything that would taste better, at least.

That's a great idea... Maybe that straw-sized chocolate-coated kind? (http://www.figis.com/gifts/offer.asp?offerID=111014&categoryID=1036&subcat=0, although I don't know anywhere to actually buy them not online) The orange kind would probably taste okay with the almondyness of marzipan...

(honestly, I don't know if anyone is actually going to eat the bride and groom. And if someone does, they will probably be under the age of 12. So candy sticks of any kind are probably just fine, flavor wise. :-) )

I'll have to do a test run - one question would be if the marzipan would "stick" well enough to it... but we shall see! Thanks for the idea!

no problem!

i mean, could you sand the candy stick? that sentence is the most ridiculous thing i have ever said, but that would help, right?

<3 how are you anyways? we should pick a date already and have dinner. between all of our schedules it's been almost 6 months of planning. ridiculous. perhaps we should plan for me to come out to princeton some evening after work and just eat some food around a table already. ;)

This is why I like this kind of cake. One ends up saying (and doing) ridiculous things, which are perfectly sensible in context. And sanding (or at least scratching up the surface a bit) really might help; one aspect of the pretzel is that it absorbs a little bit of the moisture from the marzipan and really kind of bonds to it, but I don't actually know if that's at all necessary.

I will email you, and we will win over the schedule-monsters! Eventually.
