Yesterday, the main track rider was in hospital from being bucked off on friday. And the other rider quit on friday, so of riders there was me and a 16 yr old left. So, I guess my track riding education was fast tracked, and I learnt all about the faster track work. I worked 9 horses, 6 of whom galloped properly. My first real track rides (in the dark, with all the track traffic) began with no warning on monday. I was suddenly told to get on a horse and take him round once. I don't think our horses had a good weekends racing. the top hope (who would have won apparantly) up in Waikato fell and broke a bone in his face when a horse had a heart attack just before the 2nd fence and took him out. He's ok, home safe with his friend in his paddock ( Read more... )

It's been the sunniest and warmest (during the day anyway) for the last few days since I got to NZ practically! And this after dire warnings from everyone up north that I would turn into an icecube down south. Had a great weekend up at Erewhon station - wide open spaces, rolling hills (had a run across one paddock that was like a roller coaster with rolling hills all across it, brilliant) and spectacular views. there was sun! Even if it was cold.... Went out, and had a nice ride on WR who was full of beans after having had a few days off and lots of feed. So he was pleased to be out, and we had a nice ride through the forest - nice to have a shortish relaxed ride, makes a nice change.
