that's a damn shame, not really sure how I feel about those horse-killing policies.

The euthanization sucks, but there's really no way around it. It's not the broken ankle that kills them, it's the complications from everything that results from it. Horses need to keep equal weight on all legs, otherwise it will lead to circulation issues and laminitis. And since horses naturally cannot lay down for long periods of time (the weight of the horse can crush internal organs), keeping them immobilized while recovering from an injury isn't a real possibility.
