I'm in mourning. My favorite place in the world is burning--Oak Creek Canyon, north of Sedona. About a thousand acres have already been charred and the fire is not at all contained.

I have visited the canyon many times over the years and feel deeply connected to it. I want to have my ashes scattered there when I die. I hope the damage will not ( Read more... )

I felt the same way when Pt. Reyes (north of SF) burned a number of years ago. Now, new life is abundant there, and in some places it is hard to know there were raging fires that scorched nearly everything in their path. So hard though.

It is hard. I do know that in all reality life will begin anew, even on scorched earth, and that sometimes the scorching can be cleansing, causing life to spring forth rapidly thereafter. It's just so hard to think that it may not be at all the same again in my lifetime. I don't really know the extent of the damage though, and I'm trying not to think about it now, since there's nothing I can do.

This reminds me of when the faux stone balcony above Treasure Bay was swept away by the storm; it had become, for a time, my favorite place in the whole world. I went there sometimes just to walk thru the casino, take the escalator up, & stand in the breezeway, soaking in the beauty of the Coast spread before me. How horrible it must be to watch any place such as that burn.

I hope time & nature may assuage your ache, and that the Canyon may recover once the fire has burnt itself out.

At first, I was scouring the internet for news about the fire. (I am not able to watch it directly, since the canyon is over 100 miles away from where I live). Now, I'm avoiding thinking about it if I can, since there is nothing I can do, and dwelling on what I cannot even see with my own eyes is not good for my mental state these days.

It is sad when the places that make us feel alive and happy are damaged or lost. I'm truly sorry you lost your balcony and the vista it provided you. Just knowing those places are there to go to can be so helpful and comforting.
