You should totally head back to Northampton Via Chapel Hill, NC. I have the apartment all to myself, and there is a comfy foton that you could sleep on, and I could meet the kitty.....
Nunavut?!! Holy crap, that really is the middle of nowhere. Why are they moving there (if it's not too invasive of me to ask)? I always wonder what gets people to move to such remote places.
And I thought I'd seen some remote parts of Canada...Nunavut trumps my Northwest Territories! Seriously, I'm impressed. :-)
Heh, yeah, it is out there. It's actually an island off of Baffin Island that they are moving to. The general answer is I know Christy has just always wanted to try it, at least for a year. And that is made possible because it's an area that really needs teachers, I believe their housing is paid for (along with moving them there) and then there is some sort of monetary incentive on top of what they are making as teachers. The government is paying them something like 20,000$CAN in addition to their salaries for going into the Arctic Circle to teach.
I've seen pictures online (I was trying to get google maps to find the place but it can't, mapquest can) and it's above the tree line, so it's just a different world. They are buying a snow mobile to get around, since they don't have roads it's what they'll need. Plus, though it doesn't snow a lot, what does fall will stay all winter long. At the coldest it'll be something like -40C.
Yeah, I mapquested it -- it certainly is up there! It's actually at just about the same latitude (maybe half a degree higher) as the place we went in the Northwest Territories (Inuvik) on our recent road trip. (But they still win because our town, remote though it was, does have a road leading to it. And we didn't spend the winter there. The midnight sun stuff is awesome, but I don't know if I could handle no sun for such a long time.) A friend of mine who spent some time living in Canada is always talking about how the government is willing to pay people to go live and work in public service (social services, teaching, health care, etc.) in these remote locations and says how tempting it is, apart from being so far away, the high cost of living due to everything having to come in by bush plane, the drab conditions, etc. :-) I'll bet that's going to be a really interesting experience for them -- I'm a little jealous! :-)
