Bowing out of RPG Net for good

Feb 09, 2010 14:20

I served out my suspension without particular complaint-as I said last week, I broke a rule and know I did, and don't object to them enforcing their rules. I object a lot to this exchange in the Trouble Tickets thread about it:

Eric Brennan: "In addition, it's pretty clear that given Cericonversion's "Waah, I'm packing up my crap and leaving" post ( Read more... )

(I'm Ragnarok_Engine over there.)

Yes, I'm incredibly angry with moderation over there right now. They also treated YoungSoulRebel shamefully gender-wise, although I really can't dispute his Tang-ban. Oh, and because I'm his roommate, evidently I inherit all his actions and will be judged by his behavior. It mostly seems to be Brennan (FVB), I don't know what his problem is as this seems to be a semi-recent thing for him.

I'm on the road to a serious flame-out over there now, and am researching vBulletin exploits just in case.

Hey, you are my posting hero of the day. Thank you so much for kind words in that thread.

I'm not in a position to say if Eric has always been this transphobic and the facade's just slipping or if it's an escalating thing, but the curve is very uncomfortable. I hope there won't be trouble for other trans folks there.

(YSR chiming in, was just pointed here by Scott/ogdru_jahad/Ragnarok_Engine)

Yeah, I've been appalled by the various info Scott's shared about recent admin shenanigans over there - and FVB's refusal to acknowledge that Scott and I are autonomous and perfectly capable of acting independently of each-other is both amusing and sad. I'd buy his claim of "oh, well, I just didn't know cos..., and so...." - IF it wasn't for the fact that he seems to have taken it upon himself to moderate all TS/TG-related threads. He's obviously operating from a position of bias against, and is making the most half-assed attempts to hide it that I've seen.

I don't agree with Scott's comments about seeking "vBulletin exploits" (and honestly, running a forum myself, I'd definitely feel quick to ban a member I saw making similar commentary), but I also understand why he said it. RPG.net/Tangency has become a very frustrating corner of the web lately.

Oh, hey there. Yeah, we have solidarity on this one, both on the inappropriateness of Eric's self-assignment, the undesirability of exploits, and the frustration overall.

From what I've seen of RPG.net moderation, I think the relevant quote is "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity." I've seen a whole lot of the 2nd on all facets of RPG.net, including in all manner of official policies. Also, if you decide to return, I find completely avoiding tangency far better for my stress levels.

But there is a specific set of issues around trans (and other queer) posters and their traffic, which you may not have seen if you don't go looking at the anatomy of administrativia, and I believe you don't.

No, I haven't seen any of that - ugh. I'm very disappointed/annoyed if that sort of crap is going on. The one bright spot of the rather horrifying (if admittedly fairly small) outcry over Blue Rose was that I got to see a number of homophobes get banned, and in one case helped it happen by baiting one particular moron until he made the sort of statement that got him banned.

I've never even looked at RPG... so I have no firsthand exp points.. capybyra February 9 2010, 23:42:09 UTC
I do have damn near to half of my life involved in Role/Simulation scenes and the "Situational Ethics" which seem inescapable in RP/Sim etc.

Some folks want to get into their Role/Character to "Play Fair&Square" with honor, respect, dignity being taken for granted. Being merely human- even folks sincerely wishing to "Play Nice" can&do make innocent mistakes. Hell, *I* make such misteaks often enough to question my own sanity :)

The point of honor being raised by me centers on Mods/IRC officiants etc being impartial yet respectful whilst being enforcers. It's all about a mutual respect. Which includes a few moments of sussing out how to "read" a person's motives! Was it malice or just a forgivable=innocent mistake. I can appreciate the need for rules. Not the misuse of them to disrespect a person. I may myself be out of line as a guest in your space- do please accept my advance apology if I've been wrong..

It just seemed to me that you deserved better treatment/respect than you were shown..

RPGnet has roughly 1000 users on for a weekday evening, and a user base of over 40k. It has 10 or so people on the mod staff, three of which are admins. Most of the people they deal with are most of the people who are troublemakers, which fall into maybe 10% of the board, if that. The math is what it is.

Just wanted to say that I'm very sorry to semi-drag your personal space back into the drama with my ill-considered venting.

Just a thought, here, but what about digging up the clueful_gamers community and doing something with that?
