Walk on Water
The first time, as expected, I sunk.
Susan Doran held a clear, colorless mirror up to my beliefs and I-stiff as starch-hated the reflection. I live the fluid tension between religion and science, sleeping at the Altadena monastery and working at CalSci.
Ever resistant, the knowledge I cup in my hands slips through my parted fingers. Trust, runny-thin in science, flows viscid-thick in religion. I’ve flown through the heavens; Godlike I’ve gazed upon the Earth. I choose the impossible balance of duality.
The second time, to my students’ delight, I combined faith with physics and walked on water.
