Ahhh this rant gives me warm fuzzies. I was more or less aware of how complex Winry is but you brought it to light even more. I RP her a lot, and I try SO VERY HARD to capture all the aspects of her personality. There are just so many layers that it's daunting. Too many people focus on the wrench rage side of her and that's probably why she has as many "haters" as she does. I kina blame the anime for this but that's another story ( ... )

People don't like Winry... what? Or Mei? This goes to show how little I know about this fandom. I can see Mei getting on someone's nerves but Winry? How? Winry is WINRY. She's an under appreciated, awesome character.

I honestly can't see why anyone can fault Winry for something biological. I have large breasts, and I'm not a slut, so why does everyone think that BIG BOOBIES=WHORE? Using someone's body against them is no way to bash a character or a person, whether the person be attractive or not. It's the substance of character that people need to base their oppinions on. Obviously Winry AND Mei have proved themselves realistic and independent characters that help rather then creating unnessesary drama. However, showing weakness doesn't mean Tsundere or that they are whimps. Think back to when you were twelve, and any girl can tell you they had some passionate crush for SOMEONE. Me, it shifted from Backstreet Boys to Matt from Digimon, but it's different for every person. I had an obsessive adoration for both, I would constantly daydream about them sweeping me off my feet and taking me away. This is the phase Mei is in, and no one can fault her for being NATURAL. Also, crying does not mean the person is dependent/whimpy. If I was in Winry's ( ... )

If you want "gay love", go pair Garfield with someone.
Best statement ever.

And kudos for the whole Winry-isn't-a-crybaby thing. Hell, she cries less than I do, and my life is peachy keen. (I just have some kind of mental disorder >.>)

[info]ceruleansan Thank you so much for your comments. It's so refreshing to see someone defend Winry and Ed. I don't see why they can't be a couple and you are right, Winry is a well developed character. I know why people hate her and I think it's just immature. The whole Ed/Roy thing is just baseless in my opinion. I mean could you really imagine how awkward it would be for Arakawa to make them a couple based on the personality their characters? Roy is obviously not gay and the whole concept would just be promoting pedophilia, an extremely damaging problem for people who have experienced it in real life.

i think that its very refreshing to have such strong women portrayed in anime. I think that women with a sense of individualism and self worth are needed in a culture where women are expected to play a certain role, that being docile. im a twenty five year old man and to me anime and manga are just character studies and it comes down to what the original author has in mind for the development of the characters. that said, i think based on their free spirits and open honest demeanors they would probably make a good couple, rose not so much. In the anime too dark, and from what ive read of the manga, too light. Naruto also has sakura and tsunade, both strong women that i like, and the chick from eureka seven had a strong roll(2nd in command, cant remember the name). If Winry were to take the docile wifey role it would ruin her character. I share the belief that women should be treated as humans first and foremost, and cant understand the aforementioned male obsession with docile females...too much asian bondage and bukkake guys? wtf, i ( ... )
