A bunch of rants I cooked up (one with the help of a friend) and am posting out of impulse and anger.

Warning, spoilers for the manga chapters abound, upto the latest.

Defense for everyone's favourite Automail mechanic, Winry Rockbell. Also reasons why she rocks )

because PAIRINGS SHOULDN'T HAPPEN, AMIRITE?

Exactly. Any pairing becoming canon means that other pairings contradict canon, which is unfair to the shippers. Creators should not be allowed to pair up their own characters; that should be the right of the fans. Even in a series that's all about love, canon pairings are evil and undermine everything. (And before you ask, I've seen someone say and imply exactly that. I haven't stopped boggling.)More seriously, I love how Winry's been handled in the latest chapters. I was a bit worried when Bradley used her as an unwitting hostage, but she managed to get herself out of the situation without clueing the baddies in and showed her strength of character and sense of what's right can overcome her hatred ( ... )

I'm with you in about everything you said ! So true ! I Moderate a forum about FMA and sometimes some girls just freak me out, I don't get all the Winry and Rose hate, O love Winry, she's one of the most awesome female characters I've seen. It just annoys me, I'm a EdWin fan and can't see how people ignore how canon is their relationship.
Same goes to Royai (Which is my OTP forever and ever), I always receive complains about where I get the idea of romance inside FMA, that it's a manga directed to boys and therefore it should only contain action. nonsense. Roy and Hawkeye relationship is so deep (and canon) and because it's a little more subtle than edwin people ignore it completely. and then I'm told that Roy's real chemistry was with Hughes and/or Ed ...in canon ? Wut ?
anyway... I'm with you in this ! Canon pairings rock too !

I just don't get the whole pairing war thing. Could someone explain this to me? I guess I've never really immersed myself in any fandom. I just stick to LJ and the authors worth stalking, maybe I'm missing out on something. But... I had always been under the impression that a huge part of fanfiction and what not was taking the story and the characters farther than what you're shown in the anime/manga. The fun is what might have been, or what you didn't see, or the unexplored depths to the characters, right?

So, Ed/Winry, Ed/Rose, Al/Mei, Elricest and Ed/Roy and everything else- since none of them are really confirmed by canon, since there is no white wedding at the end of the anime and so far none in the manga, aren't they all fair game? And even if there was, wouldn't they still be fair game? Not every relationship lasts forever.

What the hell would be the fun in fandom if everyone shipped the same pairing the same way?

Well, you have to agree that EdWinry by far is getting canon in the manga. Winry actually admitted toherself and Ed is constantly teased by it. It's ont thing not to like it (it's upto a person what they like or not), but another thing to ignore facts.

But I don't get it either, why can't they just respect the ship Arakawa chose, rather than bash it for stupid reasons and ruin the spirit of a story.

Yeah. When it comes to the anime, I ship Roy/Ed pretty hard, but for the manga I really like Ed/Winry. But (and I am totally not saying that there's no Ed/Winry with this), with the manga, Winry being in love with Ed is canon, but Ed's feelings are up for debate. He has very typical teenage boy reactions when people tease him about Winry. Not saying he doesn't like her, but if he does I don't think he realizes it yet. He obviously loves her, but it just doesn't feel romantic in nature yet. All his emotions are focused on Al. In a non incestual way, I think. (Or maybe an incestual way, who knows? I'm not big on Elricest.)

I like Ed/Winry, but I am basically a huge pairing slut. If it's believeable, I'm game. (And if it's not believeable but the author can make it believeable, I'm more than game.) I, as I said, fangirl Roy/Ed pretty bad, but I love discovering new, fun ways to pair up the cast. Right now I am on a Ed/Winry/Al and Hughes/Gracia/Roy/Riza kick. *shrug* Why not ( ... )

Wow, I never paid much attention to Winry before (I didn't hate her, but I didn't really like her that much,) but you brought to my attention how good of a character she actually is. xD

I've been more of a fencesitter on the final topic, but I feel that your rant in defense of pairings, or more, against those who prefer not-pairings, misses some vital points of that are maintained by that group, points that I am rather inclined to agree with on a principle level, though not in this specific level ( ... )

Because Ed is not that kind of guy who promotes or wants to domesticate a girl. Ed is a rare character, because he respects and adores women, and not in the way that you usually see a character who "Loves women". He doesn't protect girls out of 'chivalry' out of seeing them as the weaker sex and he isn't a cassanova-type womanizer who knows just how to manipulate girls with pretty words. He respects women as human beings first and foremost, and also admires the natural power of life creation that women posess. Ed wouldn't sit too well with his love interest 'gracefully blossoming' into an obedient perfect Japanese wife ( ... )
