Ohh, very interesting! The characters' voices and silences aren quite those of the series or the movie, but are different in a way that makes complete sense, given the events. Those records are an excellent idea; I can very much see Wash doing it. And your post-Minara River voice is as sweet and, um, looking for balance as it should be.

I hope this is but the first of many Firefly fics *g*.

hee, thank you so much! I'm delighted that it worked. And I think I may write more Firefly. I never thought I would wind up writing Riverfic, because she seems to dominate the fandom so thoroughly, and I just didn't think I had anything to say about her. But my mind has changed. :)

This is a neat little piece -- one of the better explorations of Wash's death that I've read. River's voice is unspeakably hard to write, and I do think you lose your grip on it a few times, although for the most part I like what you've done with her. In particular, I like all of those phrases in parentheses, which do a good job of representing her ability to think several (sometimes contradictory) thoughts at once. And I love, love Wash's message to his child. It is perfectly Wash: witty, scattered, and absolutely shattering. You've really got an ear for him.

You're right, River is *very* hard to write, and I felt that I was slipping a few times myself. But that's what first stories are for, I guess.

Wash's message is actually for the next pilot of Serenity, but of course they would eventually be shown to his child, which I hadn't actually thought of when I was writing it. :-)

How lovely. The interaction of River with Dead!Wash and the Wash of the recording was handled beautifully, and I love the last scene. Love especially River's last line. It's so very River, making a crazy kind of sense.
