We had a panel discussion about this topic at Shore Leave - we finally came to the conclusion that to get any kind of personal communication back in fandom we need a whole new platform. I hope someone invents it soon. It was easier - and I mean this - to communicate with other fans in the pre-internet era - a fact I find profoundly frustrating.
Gods yes, THIS!! All of this! While tumblr makes for some quick dissemination of squee, it's just so hard to have an real, solid communication with people. And YES, the not being able to find the original contributer is so very very frustrating! Le siiiiiigh! We really do need something with just the right combination, *fingers crossed* that something comes along soon...
Oddly enough, my final straw with Tumblr was too much personal spillage of a different sort. On LJ someone has to take the time to actually write up a douchebag opinion, on Tumblr you can just show your douchebaggy-ness with a reblog--so I found out some things that just put me off people in general.
Basically, I just don't see an upside with the Tumblr platform.
