Earthquake

At 5:07a, a little over 10 minutes ago, there was an earthquake in Shizuoka Prefecture. In some areas, the earthquake registered a 6.6 on the Richter scale. Thankfully, I'm far enough away that, although the earthquake was felt all the way out here, it registered only a .5 -- enough to cause my apartment to shake quite a bit, but nowhere near ( Read more... )

Looking at the internet reports, it turns out I was incorrect; the magnitude for my area was a 3.0, not 0.5. Still watching the news reports, though. Just about every station is reporting on it. What's really interesting is that they got footage from various cameras within the station offices as well as the view of the streets below. One station even got footage from a traffic camera, although you couldn't see much from how violently it was shaking.

We had a 6.8 quake a little south of here back in 2001 and it was pretty crazy. I had a car up on a single-post hoist and was frantically trying to lower it while staying in a doorway, thought for sure it was going to fall off.
