THE BOOK.

All of the major organized religions base their foundations on a book. Even if these were great books full of positive messages encouraging the progression of humanity and lacking any negativity or misinformation, I still wouldn’t be interested in holding up a book as being the one and only true guide for my life and existence. The majority of religions, especially the major ones, are all man-made institutions. Religion is a multi-billion dollar industry and a politically organized system of power and control. Why is there something rather than nothing?

How did all of this start (assuming there was a start…)?

What is the true origin of space, time, and matter (a.k.a. existence)?

So people believe what they want to believe, and if they believe I’m going to hell for not believing in their god, then how could I argue against that?

I wrote this in response to the frequently posed argument that atheists don’t ‘believe’ in anything. I completely disagree with that notion, but I think what they really mean to say is that atheists don’t believe in anything supernatural, and they’re right about that. My mom came from a devout, Roman Catholic upbringing in Moorhead, Minnesota.  My dad's family has a Lutheran background, although I'm not sure how religiously he was raised. He converted to Catholicism for my mom, and his grandma, my great-grandma, silently shunned the marriage, and I never met her even though she only just died about a year ago.  ( Read more... )
