Cupcake Poll

Aug 06, 2007 19:39

I am going to try, in the next few weeks, to get my own little cupcake/cake business off the ground. Exciting, yes? Problem is, I have a TON of flavors but I really need to limit it in the beginning. So I am asking you fine folks to help me out. Choose the top 5 flavors you would pick. The parenthesis are optional fillings. Any suggestions are also ( Read more... )

oops, thought it was five each section! *blush* they all sound divine! Good luck with your business venture. I am now drooling and wishing I didn't live on the west coast!

funny about the block forest cake, considering that IS what a black forest cake is(well, at least where i grew up. the icing is much like german chocolate cake. that may be one to simplify). is it busy? sure. but that is what black forest cake is, so i tried to get all the flavors in. some flavors, when written down, would simply be "black forest cake- chocolate cake with cherries and coconut carmel glaze" and not go into as much detail as i did here. the fruit ones would just be "tropical fruits with an Orange coconut glaze" I again just overstated as it were.
these are just ideas, a rough draft, of what i may be able to produce. finer detail and recipe perfection is still in the works. i just want 8 or so to perfect instead of 2 dozen :)

My choices match about 3 out of 5, and I gotta say: if these things taste as good as they sound, you'll definitely have something worth selling! One bit of constructive advice: I don't know if you're planning to use a retail space or do something out of your home, but I was in Las Vegas the month of June, and while we were there TWO "all cupcake" retail places opened. One is a chain - The Cupcake Bakery (they have a website; I was pleased w/their products but not overwhelmed), and The Mad Hatter. Mad Hatter wasn't ready to open before we left, but I got a good idea of their concept - seems like they are specializing to the nth level: cupcakes inspired by Alice in Wonderland??? I think they have a website too, so you could check for sure.

Wow, lots of lead stuff to get to my main point: the constructive criticism came from my Dad (who lives in L.V. most of the year). He was VERY surprised to see two cupcake specialty bakeries opening - in the same brand-new shopping area, no less - and asked me if the whole cupcake thing is a ( ... )

i am doing this out of my home. i was inspected a few months back to get a home business licence for bread making business. apparently i just have to get a re-inspection to be able to do the cupcakes. luckily i live in Washington, DC which has decent home baking laws. I am not doing a storefront- i grew up with a mom who ran a bakery and i cant handle that. i will keep my full time job and do this on the side.
they all do taste as great as they sound, i promise! nothing there is new except the fig one and that is just something ive been inspired to make recently since the boy's dad has a fig tree.
im basically relying on work, friends and the boyfriends family to help me make a little extra cash. i am also capable of making cakes and such, as i said mom ran a bakery and i inherited a lot of stuff when she closed down.

Oh, sorry: forgot to mention that the Mad Hatter is an interactive cupcake place, much like the pottery/ceramic "paint your own" places that were popular a while back. Apparently you can book parties, choose between cupcake flavors and different icing flavors to create your own combinations. I'm guessing there are various decorating options, too. Sounds fun for kids, but unless the quality is amazing, I could totally do that here in my own home! In fact, I have a Christmas cookie decorating party much like that for my kids' friends every year, and kids AND adults love it. 'Course, the cleanup isn't so much fun, but still .... my prediction for long-term success of the two new cupcake-only stores in Las Vegas leans heavily towards The Cupcake Bakery. It sounds MUCH more like the business you're going for, which is a good thing!

Sadly I don't even think mail order would help me all the way over here in Oz. :(

There are some really interesting (read: delicious-sounding) combinations there. Good luck with starting up. It's always a challenge, but wonderful to be doing something you really want to do and love doing.
