Something that needed to be said

After moving to the Mid West, I have been exposed to a new phenomenon: imaginary political persecution. As a Liberal, I've always relished the freedom of political expression that we are granted in this country, and have enjoyed the fact that our environment provides many forums for healthy political discourse. Absolutely. I love your term "imaginary political persecution", because an overlapped set of people also have imaginary religious and imaginary social persecution as well. These are fools who make up stories about "someone" who was offended by their wishing another fellow imaginarily persecuted cohort "Merry Xmas". Where there may be absolutely NOBODY who is offended by the religious greeting, there is outrage to be spread and money to be made by creating this imaginary offender.

These people are so fearful of differences and change that they create an exaggerated imaginary character who is fictitiously offensive enough that they can respond with self righteous indignation. And of course they need such self righteous indignation to unite themselves against their imaginary enemies.

This is the only way in which they can justify their anger or fears in facing people who are different from them.
