On the bright side, the sock pattern is really nice.
I wonder if kettle-dyed yarn is really meant for socks -- I could see both those skeins working in a really nice scarf or sweater. Although if that's the case, why would Knitpicks offer kettle-dyed sock yarn for sale?
I'll bring some of my knitting and crocheting magazines over tomorrow night -- I think there are some non-sock options (scarves and mittens, for example) for using up the Jay color. (I bet both skeins would make a very pretty and very long scarf.)
And it sucks about Elijah and the circular needle. We need to get you a nice set of interchangeable circular needles, which might reduce the possibility of kitty damage.
I called them this morning actually and they will send me another set. In the meantime, I probably won't buy samplers like this from them anymore. Instead, I'll get the sampler that is a mix of several of their sock yarns, or I'll just buy yarn individually.
I think they are similar to headphones. He's destroyed several pairs of headphones for me by chewing through the cords. He leaves big cords alone, but small ones are at great risk.
Also, to solve this consistent problem they have with Kettle Dyed Sock Yarn, in February Knitpicks will start releasing it in 100g skeins. So they are doing a good job addressing the issue.
the solution is to knit one or two rows with one skein and then one-two with the other, just carry the not working yarn up, which is a pain in the @$$ if you're doing two at once, because you need four balls, but... doable.
This is par for the course with kettle dyed yarns, I'm afraid, esp if lot #s are different. The above method is recommended when changing skeins in sweaters from one kettle dyed yarn to another, because even when the dye matches, there are always curious differences.
Sorry to ramble on, the socks look great. I would wear them as is. But if you're worried about it, I could overdye them black for you. :) Or maybe just the one? ;)
I could totally understand if they were different lot numbers, but they are in fact the same lot number. I did read several people suggesting knitting off rows, but I just didn't feel experienced enough of a sock knitter to do that. I thought it seemed like a pain. I saw some other people's pictures of their sock yarn on Ravelry, and they would have two different colored skeins from the same lot, and then I just wondered why they didn't pair the similarly colored skeins together. Perhaps all this really means is that the kettle dyed yarn isn't really for me.
Thanks for your offer to overdye the socks; I kind of like them this way though. It does make them unique. I really didn't mind too much with this color yarn, but the Jay yarn looks significantly different. So I'm glad they are sending me more skeins. I have 4 other colors that came with the sampler and they are all fine. And at this point I have enough sock yarn to make 13 pairs of socks, so I'm in no rush to start on these. I think it's time for a yarn diet.

Is it perhaps not a coincidence that they only feature *one* sock of each color? (Just kidding.)
And I want those yarn ball earrings.

I wonder why Elijah likes circular needles...interesting.
