Baekhyun looks around the vacant office. A few posters hang on the wall, but the main attraction of the room is the windows which reveal twenty-six stories below him. He glances down and notices how tiny the people are. How insignificant he is to all of those people. He simply feels worthless.
“When was the last time you cut yourself, Baekhyun?” Kim Minseok asks. This is his family therapist. After his father found out that his son cut himself, he sent him straight to a therapist and told him that he needed to be fixed. Everything in Baekhyun’s life needed to be fixed.
“It’s been a week.” He says, still not looking at Minseok. He’s still staring out of the window, mesmerized.
Why do I have to see this stupid shrink? I’m not crazy.
“Is there anything else you would like to tell me?” Minseok prods.
“No.”
August 2011
“I haven’t seen you around in a while. How have you been, Baekhyun?” The young therapist smiles.
“Great, actually. 67 days cut free.” Baekhyun proudly announces.
“That is the best news I’ve heard all day. Actually, all week. May I ask? What is the cause of this? Not that I’m complaining, just curious is all.” Minseok smiles at the boy.
“I’ve met somebody. His name is Chanyeol.” Baekhyun’s grin spreads from ear to ear.
“That’s amazing, Baekhyun. You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that you’re doing well.
“Oh, I think I do.” He smiles, prideful.
November 2011
“Minseok-hyung. I’m not sure how much more I can take. Mom is now gone, but she’s really sick and dad is never home, always doing work stuff, and it feels like Chanyeol is always upset with me.” Baekhyun’s hands fly to his face, trying to hide any tears that may come flying down.
"What's going on with Chanyeol?" Minseok prods, momentarily ignoring the other aspects contributing towards Baekhyun's misery.
"I-I don't know anymore." Baekhyun fumbles over his words. "He gets upset with me over absolutely nothing. It's almost like he's a different person."
"Hmm. That's strange. Do you ever talk to him about it when he's calmed down?"
"No," Baekhyun pauses. "He never remembers it. He basically blacks out, I-I don't know. It’s almost as though he blacks out, I-I don’t know.”
“That sounds… unusual.” Minseok ponders. Their session ends with that. Baekhyun leaves, still a mess and his heart weighed down. Minseok decides that he wants to do some more research based off of what Baekhyun has described to him.
The next day, Baekhyun goes back to visit Minseok, not because he felt that he had to, but he wanted to. Too much has happened for Baekhyun to handle alone.
“I-I left my house last night. I couldn’t stay in that empty house anymore.” Baekhyun stammers.
“Where did you go then?” Minseok prods.
“I-I went to Chanyeol’s house.”
“Did he yell at you again?”
“Y-yes.” Minseok pulls his glasses off of his face and gently rubs his temples.
“Baekhyun, are you at all familiar with the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?”
“Vaguely, why?” What does that have to do with anything? Baekhyun wonders what this has to do anything with Chanyeol.
“So I assume that you know Dr. Jekyll is a good guy, but sometimes he flips a switch and becomes evil and angry?" Minseok puts his hands over his face, disbelieving the words that are about to escape his lips.
"Yes?"
Minseok slowly exhales, "Based off what you've told me, it sounds like when things are good with Chanyeol, he's Jekyll, but when Chanyeol flips that switch, he becomes a completely different person, just like Hyde."
"What does that mean? What are you saying, hyung?" Baekhyun's expression portrays his confusion.
"What I'm saying, I believe that Chanyeol has dissociative identity disorder." Minseok hisses.
"What is that?"
"Have you heard of multiple personality disorder?"
"I know of it..." Baekhyun grumbles.
"By what you've explained, that's what it sounds like has been going on with Chanyeol."
April 2012
"How are things going? You haven't been around lately."
"Good! Things are great, actually. Chanyeol and I are getting married on the 8th."
"I know. I got the invitation, I'll be there." Minseok smiles. "How have things been with the DID?" Minseok says, feeling as though he's over stepping his boundaries.
"It's getting worse, he hit me yesterday." Baekhyun says bluntly.
"He did what?!"
"Chanyeol hit me." Baekhyun repeats.
"Are you sure that marrying Chanyeol is the best thing for you?" Minseok's concern filling the room.
"I'm in love with him, hyung. Any amount time away from is too much, it hurts. Ever since I met him, I quit cutting, the desire to end my life has faded. Chanyeol saved me. I'm not leaving him."
"You just said it's getting worse, what happens if you end up in the hospital? What happens then
Baekhyun?"
"I'll stay with Chanyeol. Minseok-hyung, I think you underestimate my love for Chanyeol."
"Maybe I do. Tell me what happened when he hit you." Baekhyun explains what happened quickly, not missing any details, but not lingering on them.
"Does it happen when anyone else is around?" Minseok asks.
"No."
"Curious, very curious." Minseok picks up the pen and begins playing with it.
"What's curious?"
"Think about it, Baekhyun." Minseok looks out of his window. "Chanyeol only gets mad at you. He only flips personalities on you. This side of him is only shown to you."
"Are you saying Chanyeol is like this because of me?!" Baekhyun shrieks.
"I'm not saying that, I'm saying that it's something about you that triggers it. I don't know what it is, but it's something. Who knows how much worse it'll get, or when he'll finally stop."
Chapter ONE
“Jesus Christ, Baekhyun. I’m tired of this!” Chanyeol booms over his petite husband, who is now hunched in the corner of their small kitchen. This outburst of Chanyeol’s came out of nowhere. Chanyeol had been watching television in the living room and Baekhyun was silently doing dishes in the kitchen after dinner. One moment everything is calm and peaceful, the next, Chanyeol is yelling and angrily shaking his fists at Baekhyun, who dives even lower to the ground to protect himself from the younger man.
“Yeol! Stop it!” He cries from the ground. It’s as though Chanyeol cannot hear him. He continues to rage towards his husband. He squats down and becomes eye level with Baekhyun.
“I am just so angry, Baekhyun. I don’t think you understand.”
“Yeol! Stop! Please! You’re really starting to scare me.” Baekhyun is now sobbing uncontrollably on the floor. He hates when Chanyeol gets like this, even though Chanyeol can’t control it. Most of these outbursts last for less than half an hour, but the bad ones can go for hours and hours. Baekhyun is afraid that this is going to be a bad one. Whenever they happen, it always brings Baekhyun to tears and the worst part for him is that his husband never remembers any of it.
“Why? Why should I?” He knocks Baekhyun’s hands away from his face, revealing his red, puffy eyes and the rivers of tears flowing down his delicate face. For a moment, Chanyeol’s mind thinks about how Beautiful Baekhyun is. Chanyeol shakes his head and shakes away any happy thoughts. Every happy thought gets shoved into the dark part of his mind, not to be seen anytime soon.
Chanyeol regains focus on his original goal, and begins to think about how everything he sees is red. He is that angry. He’s shaking with rage, and he has not the slightest clue why.
“Baby…” Baekhyun whimpers. He’s shaking, afraid, scared. Chanyeol is blocking him out, no thought of the love he has for the man runs through his mind. He stands up straight and poises himself over Baekhyun and begins to raise his arm, flinging it forward and slamming his fist into the side of Baekhyun’s head. The pain rings throughout his head and quickly spreads through the rest of his body, causing the non-physical pain to radiate directly to his heart.
Chanyeol isn’t satisfied quite yet. He walks back to the stove and Baekhyun glances up and for a moment thinks that this is over, but quickly realizes how wrong he truly is. Chanyeol is now walking back towards him once more, this time carrying a frying pan in his right hand, playing with it like a toy.
The second Baekhyun’s eyes lock onto the pan, he tries to crawl away beneath Chanyeol’s long legs, but is caught in the midst of his escape. Chanyeol grabs him by his collar, forcing his elder to stand, looking him directly in the eye.
“Why are you running from me, Baekkie? Do you not love me anymore?” Chanyeol sticks out his bottom lip, forming a pout, which only lasts a split second before an evil grin flashes across his face. Baekhyun does not recognize this man, he doesn’t want to believe that this is his husband. Without any warning, Chanyeol raises his right hand and with his full strength, hits Baekhyun with the pan, causing the delicate man to fall to the floor, completely unconscious.
Chanyeol opens his eyes, feeling as though he’s just woken up. He thinks that he had just heard a loud noise, but takes a look around him, investigating his surroundings. He glances straight ahead and sees the refrigerator right in front of him. Maybe I’m sleep walking again. He thinks to himself. He takes a step forward and steps on something that isn’t the floor, causing the clumsy giant to stumble, landing against the fridge, his face pressed against the ice cold freezer door.
“Baek!” He shouts, finally coming to his senses. He gently shakes Baekhyun who is unresponsive on the ground, sprawled out like he just got hit by a car. Chanyeol becomes frantic. He digs in his pocket, searching for his cellphone so he can call the police and an ambulance. He finally gets it out of his pocket and with shaky hands, he dials the emergency number, requesting for help immediately.
When they arrive, the EMTs explain to Chanyeol that Baekhyun has suffered a major concussion, maybe even more and that he’ll have to be in the hospital for a few days.
“He’s going to be transported to a nearby hospital for testing, just to make sure that he’ll be okay.” The male EMT explains.
“Can I go with? Please?!”
“I’m afraid not,” An officer stops Chanyeol and silently dismisses the man, “We have some questions for you.”
“Fine, then can I go with my husband?” He pouts, crossing his arms in frustration.
“We’ll have to see about that. Firstly, tell me everything that happened this evening.”
“All I can remember is that Baekhyun made dinner, spaghetti, to be specific. I remember that I went into the living room to relax and watch some TV and Baekhyun offered to do the dishes since work was kind of stressful. After that, I don’t remember anything, so I guess I fell asleep, but I must have slept walked into the kitchen and I tripped over him, and he was unconscious on the ground.” Chanyeol says with frustration leaking into his voice, he honestly can’t remember anything.
“So you have no idea how your husband ended up unconscious underneath your feet with a pan next to his head?” The officer eyes Chanyeol up and down, suspiciously.
“No, sir.” Chanyeol responds, being fully honest with the officer, but knows that he doesn’t believe him. Another officer briskly walks in the room and heads straight to the other officer that had been interrogating Chanyeol. In a low voice, inaudible, he whispers something into his ear.
“Park Chanyeol, you’re under arrest.” He says grimly.
“For what?!” Chanyeol shrieks.
“Domestic violence.”
Tears quickly fill Chanyeol’s eyes and the other officer walks over to him, harshly grabs each of his wrists and cuffs them together. The final click of the metal, locking his hands behind his back sends Chanyeol over the edge, he feels the emptiness and pain filling his heart and he begins to sob uncontrollably.

“You need to tell us everything, Baekhyun.” An officer tells him.
“Don’t lie or leave anything out just to protect Chanyeol either. We’re here to help you.” The officer next to him says.
Baekhyun slowly opens his eyes, wishing they would just leave him alone and that Chanyeol would just get here already. He looks at the officers in front of him, they’re both about six feet tall and rather skinny. Neither of them have their guns on them, which relaxes Baekhyun, but only slightly. He sighs deeply before finally speaking.
“First of all, what the hell happened to me? Why am I here?”
“Well, that’s partially why we’re here asking you. Nobody really knows. Chanyeol didn’t provide any information, so tell us what you know.”
He squeezes his eyes shut, wanting to forget everything that happened. How long ago was it? He had no clue to even what day it is. All of the vivid images pop into his mind. He doesn’t want to remember. He doesn’t want to tell them because he knows that they’ll find Chanyeol and lock him up forever.
“Well?” The officer says, getting slightly impatient with Baekhyun.
“Promise me that he’ll be safe and nothing will happen to him.” He says with his eyes still closed. When he doesn’t get an immediate response he opens his eyes to look at the men.
“Chanyeol will be fine.”
“Give me your word.” He demands.
“You have my word.” The officer coolly responds.
Baekhyun squeezes his eyes shut once again, unable to believe that he’s about to spill the secret that he’s been keeping about the love of his life. He’s upset and conflicted if this is really the right thing to do. He wishes that everybody would just disappear and that Chanyeol was with him, cuddling him, and protecting him.
“Chanyeol...” he starts, still not convinced. He could lie, but what’s the use? If he lies he could go to jail and leave Chanyeol all by himself.
“Yes?”
“Chanyeol has multiple personality disorder with mild amnesia that follows.” He hisses through gritted teeth. “That being said, when he gets into his ‘mood’ or ‘alter personality’ or whatever the hell it’s called, he lashes out and occasionally hits me, but for the most part he just does a lot of yelling. It’s never been this bad before. He doesn’t know either, I just don’t have the heart to tell him.” Baekhyun chokes. He’s now sobbing in his hospital bed. He can’t believe he just said everything. In thirty seconds, he spilled the information that took years for him to acquire. He sees the officer take down the notes extremely fast, without looking up at Baekhyun, the officers both nod and begin to head out of the door.
“Wait!” Baekhyun yells, grabbing their attention. “Where’s my husband?”
“He’s already in jail, Baekhyun.”
Without another word, he sinks down in his bed, unsure of what to think or feel. He wants to curl into a ball and cry, but the IV in his arm won’t allow that. He feels broken and disappointed in himself, as though he let Chanyeol down. He feels like he didn’t do his job of protecting his husband properly.
Baekhyun hastily reaches to the table on his left and grabs the hospital phone. He dials the number that he memorized as a child. The phone begins to ring and suddenly Baekhyun becomes nervous.
First ring, nothing.
Second ring, no answer.
Baekhyun realizes that this is a bad idea and reaches back over the bed to hang up the phone when a voice picks up on the other line. He quickly moves it to his ear to hear what is being said.
“Hello?” A familiar voice rings out on the other end. Baekhyun’s throat drops to his stomach.
“Dad,” he pauses. “It’s Baekhyun, I need your help.”
Chapter TWO
Baekhyun’s father, Byun Minsoo, had never supported his son’s choice in marrying Chanyeol. It wasn’t because he thought Chanyeol was a bad guy, but because Chanyeol is a guy, and not the girl Minsoo had picked for his son. Even though he isn’t supportive of the choice, he still supports his son. That’s why Minsoo came to the rescue.
Minsoo drives to the hospital as quickly as he can, weaving in and out of traffic. He’s curious as to what has made his son so desperate. Minsoo enters his son’s room and is almost brought to tears by the first sight of him. He has a mix of emotions flowing through him. A rush of happiness comes through first, being able to finally see his son for the first time in years, just after Baekhyun’s mother died and he married Chanyeol. The next rush of emotion is sadness. Baekhyun is lying in his bed, skinnier than ever. He’s sad to see the IV running out of his arm and is unhappy that his son looks this sick.
Minsoo stops walking when he enters the room and doesn’t realize that he is practically gawking at his son.
“Oh Baek!” Minsoo cries with tears welling up in his eyes. Baekhyun looks up and his eyes focus on the slender figure in the doorway. The last time he actually spoke to his father was the day before he married Chanyeol.
He notices how his father has aged significantly since the last time he saw him. His short, neatly kept hair now has grey streaks which are beginning to take over his head. The wrinkles on his forehead are starting to sag and his glasses seem as though they have slowly progressed down his nose. He looks like one of those old people you see on television commercials.
“Dad, you’ve changed.” Baekhyun softly says, afraid of approaching a conversation.
“You’ve lost a lot of weight, Baekhyun.” His father says grimly.
“Can you help me?” Baekhyun pleads. Minsoo walks over to the bed and sits on the edge and places his hand on Baekhyun’s knee.
“What do you need help with son?”
“Chanyeol is in jail and I need him back. I know that you’ve retired, but please. I’m begging you.” His father sits next to him on the bed, completely silent. His facial expression never changes, which causes Baekhyun to worry more. He put himself out there for the first time and he believes that he’s about to get abandoned again. He begins to feel his heart sink with every moment that passes by.
“Baekhyun,” he starts, “I don’t support your choices, however, you are my son and I’m here to help you however I can. What are we going to do about Chanyeol?” Baekhyun releases a breath that he didn’t realize he was holding in.
“I need him back. At this point I don’t care if he gets freed or if I have to break him out of jail myself.” Baekhyun says, becoming more and more desperate with every word. Minsoo nods with seemingly understanding eyes.
Without wasting another moment, they both get to work on how they’re going to get Chanyeol out. Baekhyun tells his father everything, no matter how painful it was, but it needed to be done. Minsoo, being a former lawyer, is going to defend Chanyeol when it comes to his trial. He tells Baekhyun that he more than likely will know the judge and will play extra nice to get the desired result.
______________________
The following morning, Minsoo wakes up the earliest he has in years. He’s going to drive back into the city and meet his son-in-law for the first time. He wants to hear Chanyeol’s excuse for what happened to his son. Minsoo walks through the front door of the jail and is immediately greeted by a familiar face.
“Byun Minsoo. Long time no see, eh? Haven’t seen your shining face around here lately. How’ve you been?” The guard kindly greets him from behind the glass window. Minsoo looks behind his familiar pal and sees the security cameras displayed on multiple small televisions. Nothing exciting his happening, so he regains his focus.
“Same old stuff, Choi.” He responds coolly. He notices the clipboard, now placed in front of him. He scrawls his name on the piece of paper and hastily writes “Park Chanyeol” next to his own.
“Oh, Chanyeol? Good luck with that. I hear he’s pretty much done for.” Choi notes as he takes the clipboard back into his possession. Minsoo sighs heavily. He really doesn’t want to meet Chanyeol. Without saying anything else, there’s a loud buzz and the metal door swings open, granting him access to the interrogation rooms. These halls are overly familiar to Minsoo. He was always here when Baekhyun was a child, always defending people who really shouldn’t have been defended. Minsoo knows his way around, he could find his way around the building blindfolded. Either way, he still gets escorted everywhere.
Minsoo is led into a dim-lit interrogation room. In the center of the room there’s a lone table with a single chair on either side. On the far side of the room is the mysterious two-way mirror. Minsoo has been on both sides of it far too many times. When he fully enters the room, the door slams shut behind him, he takes a few steps and sets his briefcase on the table and opens it. He reaches inside and grabs a legal pad, pen and his old voice recorder.
Minsoo patiently waits for his son-in-law to arrive. He paces around the room nervously before taking a seat in the cold metal chair. He begins to twiddle his thumbs and close his eyes, forcing himself to relax. A few moments pass and then he hears the sound of chains, he instantly perks back up, believing that it must be Chanyeol. He opens his eyes, double checking, making sure that everything is ready to go.
Suddenly the sound of footsteps are a lot closer and then they come to a complete halt. The door squeaks open, painfully slow. A tall, slender figure enters the room, his head hung down, and not making eye contact with anyone. He has a grave expression upon his face. He is directed by the guards to the seat across from Minsoo.
Chanyeol carefully examines the man in front of him. He’s dressed in a black suit, with a red tie, loosely tied around his neck. He has almond shaped eyes and he takes a note of how they have a familiar twinkle in them. Chanyeol struggles to figure out why he feels like he knows this man.
“D-do I know you from somewhere?” Chanyeol pipes up, breaking the silence and giving up on trying to figure it out on his own.
“No, we’ve never met before. I’m Baekhyun’s father.” Minsoo says coldly.
He looks at Chanyeol, who sits in an orange jumpsuit with the word “inmate” spray-painted across the chest. His hands are bound together by the set of handcuffs that also reach down to his ankles and waist. His eyes move upward so he can examine his son-in-law’s face. He notice that Chanyeol’s face is overall round and naturally pale, with a hint of pink left in his cheeks. He also notices that that his lips, eyes, and ears are rather large, but somehow to fit his face nicely. Once those words escape Minsoo’s lips, Chanyeol puts two and two together.
“Ho- Wha- Huh?” Chanyeol stumbles over his words, unsure of what to think or say. His eyes dart back and forth across Minsoo’s face, finally making the connection. “Is Baekhyun okay?” He says, his voice full of worry. “I haven’t heard anything or been able to speak to him at all.”
“Baekhyun is fine. He is leaving the hospital later today. Now, let’s get to the real reason I’m here. The moment my son found out where you were, he called me without hesitation. As you know, Baekhyun and I haven’t had the best relationship, so getting a call from him was quite the surprise. You see, Chanyeol, I’m a lawyer, and I can potentially help you get out, but you need to tell me everything.”
“It’s getting annoying how people think that I know exactly what happened,” Chanyeol grumbles to himself. “I don’t know anything. All I remember is watching TV and Baekhyun was doing dishes. I don’t remember anything else until I found him, passed out cold on the floor. Honestly, I don‘t know anything else! Please believe me.” Chanyeol is all but yelling at Minsoo.
Minsoo sits there, contemplating everything Chanyeol has just told him. He knows that Chanyeol has told him the truth, but he doesn’t want his son to be with him anymore. He wants what is best for Baekhyun, and that’s for him to not be with Chanyeol anymore. Anything he can do to prevent their reunion is good.
“I believe you, Chanyeol. Even though it sounds like complete bullshit coming from your mouth, I have my reasons for believing you. But that being said, I don’t want you seeing my son anymore.” Minsoo growls, his voice suddenly sounding angrier than he originally intended. Chanyeol jumps with his sudden change in tone.
“I have half a mind to file a restraining order for Baekhyun as soon as I leave here. Before he met you, my son didn’t think he was gay, he was healthy, he was happy. Now I look at him and he looks sick and miserable. He doesn’t know what he wants anymore. You’ve brainwashed him!” Minsoo shouts at Chanyeol. “He is in pain because of you.” The last six words cause Chanyeol to crack. His eyes well up with tears and he doesn’t bother trying to fight it. His bottom lip uncontrollably trembles, and he’s shaking with sadness and anger, all mixed into one. Minsoo feels a sense of accomplishment of breaking Chanyeol down.
“W-what d-d-do you mean? He h-hurts because of m-me?” Chanyeol struggles to get out.
“Chanyeol,” he sighs. “You have D.I.D. mixed with amnesia.”
“W-what d-does t-that mean?”
“You have dissociative identity disorder, causing you to black out and become completely crazy, so you’re nothing like yourself at all. When you black out, you usually scream at Baekhyun, on some occasions you hit him. This time he ended up in the hospital.” Minsoo says harshly. “Then you wake up, not realizing it ever happened. He doesn’t have the heart to tell you any of this, but I don’t care what you think about me. I figure that you should probably know these things about yourself.” Minsoo packs up his things and neatly returns them to his briefcase. He silently shuts the lit and grabs the handle. He doesn’t look at Chanyeol, even though Chanyeol’s stinging, tear filled eyes are locked on him.
Minsoo leaves the room and before the door can fully close behind him, the guards rush into the room to collect Chanyeol who is now lethargic, with tears flowing down his face. They reach his cell and roughly shove him to it. The guard waits for Chanyeol to return to the door so he can be removed from the cuffs. Once he is released from the chains, the door is slammed in his face. Chanyeol goes to his bed and lays down on the ice-cold mattress. He begins to cry and pulls his knees close to his chest and cries himself into a painful slumber, realizing that he is a monster who ruins people’s lives.
______________________
Minsoo arrives at the hospital for the final time. He puts his car in park and climbs out. He weaves through the parked cars, wanting to see his son again. When he finally reaches the automatic doors, he sees Baekhyun standing on the other side, patiently waiting with a petite nurse dressed in pink scrubs with daises on them.
“Ready to go home, son?” Baekhyun simply nods in response, but he really wants to go back to his house, the one that he shares with Chanyeol. Baekhyun doesn’t want to return to his childhood home, full of painful memories. Minsoo kindly thanks the nurse and leads his son into the parking lot. Baekhyun swiftly climbs into his father’s car, already feeling trapped.
His father lives on the outskirts of the city, about 30 minutes away from the hospital. The whole ride to the house is in a stiff silence. Not a single word is spoken, no radio to ease the silence. Just the quite sound of the engine purring. They pull into the driveway and every muscle in Baekhyun’s body tenses. He is looking at the house that he vowed never to set foot in again.
He never wanted to go back, but here he is, sitting outside of this house, filled with memories of sleepless nights and tear soaked pillows. He remembers how he was either always stuck home alone because his mother would be sleeping around or his father would be at work late into the night, trying to help some person who didn’t deserve his father’s help.
Minsoo and Baekhyun walk through the front door and remove their shoes respectfully at the door, still yet to say a word to each other. Baekhyun is beginning to feel nervous about Chanyeol’s court date, which happens to be tomorrow. He believes that his husband is going to be freed, but he can’t help but to be on edge with the situation.
Baekhyun is clueless as to the words that were exchanged between his husband and his father, but he thinks positively about the situation, feeling confident in his father for the first time in his life.
Baekhyun exits the room and heads down the narrow hallway, remembering everything about it. He dashes into the last room on the left, his old bedroom. He feels the wall for the light switch. When he finally finds it, light fills the room and he glances around the room. It’s exactly how he left it when he moved out. After his mother died, he had no reason to stay in the empty house. Minsoo was never home, so Baekhyun left so he could actually do something with his life.
The walls of his room are a light grey and on the hardwood floor is a red shabby rug that rests underneath the bed. Even the same sheets remain on the bed, appearing untouched. Baekhyun climbs into his old bed and closes his eyes, wanting to fall asleep, but his mind wanders to images of Chanyeol. He longs for his husband. He tosses over on his side, trying to focus on sleep. More images pop into his mind. Now he thinks about Chanyeol being in jail, alone in a cell, by himself. He tosses himself onto his other side, getting frustrated. After an hour of not being able to sleep, Baekhyun climbs out of the bed, full of irritation.
“Forget it.” He grumbles to himself. He’s going back to his house and his bed. “It’s only five miles from here.”
He quietly exits his room and tip-toes past his father’s room, where the door is slightly cracked, he sees his father asleep on his back, snoring loudly. He feels like a teenager once again, sneaking around the house after his parents are asleep. He sneaks into the kitchen and grabs a piece of paper and pen from the counter.
Dad,
I’ve headed home, I can’t sleep here. I’ll see you at the hearing tomorrow.
Love,
Baekhyun
He puts the pen back down and tapes the paper onto the fridge, so his father will be able to find it. Baekhyun exits the house, grabbing his shoes on the way out. It’s surprisingly chilly out for being mid-summer. Baekhyun only sees two cars on the entire way home. Once he’s on the familiar sidewalk, only two blocks away from his house, he feels a rush of relief. He even smiles when he sets foot on his yard.
The front door is unlocked, but everything has remained untouched, almost as though they never left. Baekhyun doesn’t bother looking around anymore and heads straight to his bedroom. He sets the alarm clock for the morning, wanting to be ready for the big day that lies ahead. He crawls into the bed, sliding over to Chanyeol’s side ad cuddling with Chanyeol’s pillow as he falls fast asleep.
______________________
The alarm goes off in the morning, nice and early. Baekhyun grumbles, not wanting to wake up. He was having a happy dream about him and Chanyeol being together again, free at last. The sunlight begins to peek through the curtains, not allowing him to drift back into his slumber. Baekhyun looks at the clock, grumbling more as he crawls out of bed and shuts the alarm off. He clumsily steps out of the room and walks into the bathroom to wash his face off. He quickly does so, brushes his teeth and heads back to his room.
He walks over the door of their closet and twists the knob and pulls the door open. The scent of Chanyeol’s cologne fills Baekhyun’s nostrils. He looks at the closet and how organized it is. He forgot that he had done that when they first moved in together. Their clothes are split into two sides and are organized by color. Chanyeol’s clothes are on the right side, Baekhyun glances but realizes that everything would be too big to fit on his petite figure. Even Chanyeol’s ties are far too long for Baekhyun. He reaches into the far back of the closet, further than anyone would ever think to reach, but he knows exactly what he’s looking for.
The tips of his finger feels the silk piece of fabric he was searching for. He gets a better grip on it and pulls the item forward. Once it reaches the light, Baekhyun examines the object in his hand. The red tie he wore on his wedding day, is just the same brightness as it was when he last wore. It. At the tip of the tie, in tiny gold letters, “BB + PC” is sewn into the ilk. He turns the tie over and makes sure that their anniversary is still sewn in as well. Chanyeol has the same exact tie, except his is in blue and silver instead.
Baekhyun walks over to their dresser, the tie tightly gripped in his hand. He looks for a particular frame out of the many that rest on top. Its right in front of his face, pulled all the way to the front. Almost five years previous to this day, they exchanged their vows, Baekhyun fully aware of Chanyeol’s condition, but not loving him any less because of it. Regaining focus, Baekhyun briskly walks back to the closet and grabs his best suit.
He quickly glances at the clock and realizes that it is almost seven and he wants to be there early, ensuring himself a good seat, as close to Chanyeol as possible. Baekhyun slides the white dress shirt over his shoulders and carefully buttons it, not missing a single button. He quickly dresses himself the rest of the way, leaving the precious tie for last.
Baekhyun glances at himself one last time before leaving. He looks handsome, his hair lies neatly on his forehead, just out of his face enough so his eyes can still be seen. He leaves the bedroom and grabs the car keys from the kitchen counter and exits the house, not bothering to lock the door behind him. He climbs into the car, starts it, and leaves for downtown without hesitation. Baekhyun is beginning to feel anxious, nervous, and excited all at once. He just wants Chanyeol. His Chanyeol.
Chanyeol is going to come home today. He thinks to himself.
Baekhyun parks across the street from the courthouse, getting a lucky spot. He climbs out of his car and locks the door. He doesn’t trust this part of town. He briskly walks across the street, after checking to make sure the street was clear. As he enters the courthouse, it begins to rain. Once inside, Baekhyun realizes that he’s never been inside this part of the courthouse. The layout begins to confuse him, after looking around for a moment and he decides that he has no clue which room Chanyeol’s hearing is even in. Baekhyun spins around in a circle before hiseyes lock onto a desk with the word “information” placed over it. He casually walks over there and waits in line until one of the windows open up.
“Next!” A woman says from behind the counter. Baekhyun scrambles over to the open window.
“H-hello. Could you tell me what room Park Chanyeol’s hearing is in today?” He asks nervously. The woman types something and squints to see the screen. She pulls away from the screen and picks up her stamp and pushes it into the red ink pad.
“His hearing is in room 229. Turn around and it’s on your left.” She says in a monotone voice. “Next!” She barks as Baekhyun turns around.
He turns around and sure enough, to his left, room 229. He quietly enters the room and finds only two other people in the room. Baekhyun makes his way to the front of the room and sits on the left side, behind where Chanyeol will be sitting soon. He anxiously searches the room for his father. Baekhyun slumps down in his seat, impatiently waiting for the clock to reach nine o’clock so he can finally see his beautiful husband. He taps his foot nervously, wondering where in the world his father is.
Where the hell is he? Please tell me he isn’t going to bail on me now. After ten minutes pass, Baekhyun begins to twiddle his thumbs in addition to the foot tapping. More and more people begin to fill the room, but none of them are his father. Baekhyun nervously checks his watch. 8:56.
Seriously, where the hell are you at? He thinks to himself. The bailiff rises to shut the door for good at 8:59, but the last person to stumble into the room is none other than Byun Minsoo. Baekhyun sighs in relief. Minsoo makes his way to the front of the courtroom, now sitting in front of Baekhyun.
“This is a place for abusers, drug users, thieves and rapists… not Chanyeol.” Baekhyun thinks aloud, feeling sad. He shouldn’t be here. Chanyeol shouldn’t be here.
“Alright ladies and gents’, it’s that time. Turn off your cell phones or put them on silent.” The prosecutor enters the room from a side door. The abruptness of her entrance causes Baekhyun to jump in his seat. He instinctively looks at his watch. Nine o’clock on the dot. His heart rate instantly sky rockets at the thought of simply seeing Chanyeol again. Any time apart from him is too much for his delicate heart to handle.
“First on our agenda this morning is the case involving Park Chanyeol.” Minsoo rises from his seat, nodding in the direction of the prosecutor. The door where the prosecutor had just entered moments prior opens once more. Two police officers enter the room first. Baekhyun can hear the rhythm of chains behind them. He sits straight up, breaking out of his slump, craning his next to catch a glimpse of his giant.
When he finally catches sight of Chanyeol, his heart instantly flutters, just like it used to when they first met. Seeing him causes Baekhyun’s lips to curl up at the sides, forming a grin on his face. Chanyeol is seated next to Minsoo. His head hangs low as they remove the chains from his wrists. Baekhyun wants more than anything to talk to Chanyeol, or to simply say hello.
Baekhyun’s fairytale ends in his head and he remembers the seriousness of the situation, his smile slowly fades and he feels a hole in his heart at the sight of seeing his handsome husband in the hideously orange jumpsuit.
“Yeol…” Baekhyun quietly whines in his seat. Chanyeol half turns around to see if he recognizes anyone, but he doesn’t turn around far enough to see his husband sitting directly behind him. He turns back around and makes hesitant eye contact with Minsoo, holding back his tears that threaten to flow down his cheeks at any moment.
I’m going to tell my side of the story, how I know nothing, get laughed at and humiliated, and then my “lawyer” is going to have me locked up for the rest of my life. Baekhyun isn’t going to wait for me, why would he? I’m nothing in comparison to him. He’s so gentle and so kind. He’s too good for a monster like me. He’ll move on and live the rest of his life without me.
Chanyeol’s internal dialogue sours his mood even more. He gives up on any possibility of having a future with the love of his life.
The judge enters the room, dressed in his solid black robe, looking as though he’s already in a foul mood. Chanyeol loses all hope at this point.
“Psst! Yeol! Yah, you pabo!” Baekhyun whispers, five feet away from Chanyeol. He hears his nickname “Yeol” instead of his full name, and he knows exactly who said it. Chanyeol turns around at lightning speed, searching for the face he has been longing to see. He looks directly behind him, where the sound came from and sees the most beautiful face he has ever seen, his husband’s. Chanyeol wave excitedly, momentarily forgetting the awful situation they’re stuck in.
“Everybody please rise.”
The words pull them out of their daydream. Forcing himself to pry his eyes away from Baekhyun and rising to his feet, Chanyeol is disappointed that their bliss only lasted for a millisecond before it was pried from their hands. The long, usual speech is given, and everyone is requested to take their seats. After a brief moment of silence, the judge is handed a manila folder. He vigorously flips through it before finally looking up.
“Mr. Park, you are being tried for domestic violence and attempted murder, is that correct?”
“Attempted m-murder?” Chanyeol stammers. Minsoo jabs an elbow into Chanyeol’s ribs. “Y-yes, your honor.” He corrects himself.
“I also read here that your father-in-law is the one here defending you today, is that also correct?”
“That is correct, your honor.” Minsoo pipes up.
Defending me, my ass. Chanyeol thinks.
“Strange, very strange.” The judge murmurs to himself.
Chanyeol feels uneasy. He knows his fate. He knew it from the moment Minsoo dropped the bombshell on him. How could he not go to jail? He tried to kill Baekhyun, if he didn’t love Baekhyun as much as he did, he wouldn’t be fighting this as much as he is. He knows that heneeds Baekhyun and that Baekhyun needs him, the separation is almost too much for either of them to handle. Every turn of the page the judge does, causes Chanyeol to jump.
“So you have no idea what happened that night?” The judge asks Chanyeol, still not looking up from the papers.
“No, your honor.” Chanyeol replies respectfully.
“Your honor? May I?” Minsoo asks the judge, who nods in response. He finally looks away from the paperwork to focus his eyes on Minsoo, as did everyone else in the entire courtroom.
And here we go… Good-bye Baekhyun, my love.
“I personally do not believe that Park Chanyeol is a bad person,” He starts. Chanyeol’s heart instantly sinks, knowing the harsh words to follow. Baekhyun perks up, believing this is the moment he’s trusted his father to help set right. He believes this is the moment he’s been waiting for. “However, he put my son, my baby boy, in the hospital. Whether he remembers it or not, he did it. He’s a monster who he loses control of himself. She should be locked up and kept away from my son!”
Baekhyun’s jaw drops to the floor. Tears form in Chanyeol’s eyes. They’re both devastated. Nothing in Baekhyun’s mind is straight, he can’t think clearly. He hears the buzz of people whispering behind him. He wants nothing more than for them to shut up so he can clearly process what just happened.
Without missing a beat, the judge picks up the mallet and begins to speak.
“Park Chanyeol, I sentence you to six years in our top security prison, with no chance of parole.” He brings the mallet down, finalizing the sentence. The sound is like a gunshot to Baekhyun.
In that spilt second, he fears losing the one person that has ever made him happy. The one who saved him. How could he? Could he really let this man slip from his fingers because of a spiteful old man who is related to him, or because he wasn’t careful with Chanyeol from the start? How could he let Chanyeol go sit in prison for six years? He can’t. There is no way he could live with himself if he let that happen. Without hesitation, Baekhyun stands up and jumps over the short wall in front of him. He dashes to Chanyeol’s side, momentarily glancing towards Minsoo who looks at him with bewildered eyes, as though he cannot believe that his son just jumped over the barrier. Baekhyun’s eyes are full of rage, all of which is completely directed at the man before him. The one who betrayed his son’s last ounce of trust.
Realizing that police officers and security guards are rushing towards them, Baekhyun grabs a hold of Chanyeol’s large wrist and pulls him up to his feet.
“We’ve got to run, Yeol. Now!” He shouts in Chanyeol’s ear.
