Damage Report!

So, as a person who has never really broken a bone before, this broken arm thing is a fresh new experience for me. I just thought I'd ramble on about all those things that just don't work right here anymore. If you've done this before, then you know: THE STRUGGLE IS REAL ( Read more... )

I'm left handed & live in fear of breaking anything on that arm - even the pinkie finger... Like you, up 'til now, I've never broken a bone. I've been burned, slashed, scraped, grazed, sprained & snapped a tendon, but no bones have suffered

Yet

So does the cast make your arm itch... like now? Does your arm feel really itchy now??

Yes, take care of your primary arm! It's critical. Better to break a leg and still have both arms active. Well, ok, better not to break anything at all.

I expected more itchyness, I do get dry itchy skin sometimes so I was worried I'd go insane from itching. But it hasn't been that bad at all, so I guess so far I lucked out.

Knitting needles and/or barbecue skewers are your friend! Careful insertion followed by gentle back-and-forth movements between cast and skin can help itching ...

Yes, long pokey scratchy things were useful at times. Cheeky cast!

0.5 -- that must totally suck--when I had tendinitis in my hands, specifically the thumbs and first two fingers of both hands, I ended up typing with my ring and pinky fingers, and that was bad enough.

3. I am ambidextrous, so I can mouse lefty, but it's slow and still occasionally results in way too much complication.

6. Get one of those bath brushes. Or the bath-pouf-onna-stick, or the loofah-onna-stick. No, really. You'll thank me.

7. My summer car, the Little Black Convertible of Facebook Cover Photo fame, is a manual. The winter car (which is also black, but neither little nor a convertible) is an automatic, because Certain Spouses can't drive stick, so I am at least covered if I were to lose the use of either my right arm or my left leg.

It's funny, I try to type normally and my left hand is just fine but now and then my right hand forgets its proper timeingand I skip a space bar or reverese letters or what not.

I'm better at mousing now, but fine movements are still a challenge.

Hmm, bath brush sounds quite practical in this case. Thank yoy for the advice!

I never learned stick myself; maybe I should just for reference. But definitely not right now.

Oh, and an electric toothbrush! The electric toothbrush was a life-changer when my right elbow was incapacitated due to tendinitis.

On the bath brush front, I can also thoroughly recommend the Spin Spa body brush, which is $9.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond and also Walgreens (although about twice that much on Amazon). Battery operated! It's a powered scrubbie!

Leg casts are terrible in the winter, I'm sure. A little ice and snow and yeah, not so good. I had dislocated my knee back in college, in January, and I was in a knee brace for a while, which sucked.

At least with a knee brace you can wear socks and shoes. I was properly shod on my left foot and only had a thin summer knee sock over my open-toed cast on the other, with a cutout to accommodate the heel thingy. Not fun!

Never had a broken bone, although, with age rearing its ugly head, I suppose I have that to look forward to. Had a few stitches in the head area during my youth, which I guess explains a lot...

Thank the gods for living in the tech age, where you would not be forced to write with your left hand, were you to break your dominant arm.

Ah, there's a job for Lefty.
I have no idea why this made me laugh. Really. Unless it's because I took it out of context. And because I'm twelve...

Typing is not terrible, but writing is just the worst.

"There's a job for Lefty" can probably be interpreted many ways... ;)

It was not my finest moment. Sure, it looked really cool, but I think I'll pass on the repeat :D
