In the midst of losing my mind in cleaning for our annual holiday party, a couple good things happened today ( Read more... )

I agree completely - while kill shelters are heart-breaking and awful, it's equally painful to watch no-kill shelters turn away deserving animals. I adopted my baby dog from a kill shelter and shudder to think of what would have happened if he'd been adopted by someone who didn't want a deaf dog once they discovered it. Our next pup will be adopted from a breed-specific rescue group, and some of them linger for months before getting adopted, thus taking up room for other Dobermans in need of rescue. It's totally "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

Good luck with the writing! And the Christmas list! I never really have trouble coming up with stuff to ask for, but then again, I'm a clothes horse. And completely materialistic. :P

The place I volunteer for is always full of cats and looking for new foster families. It is totally heartbreaking that they don't have room when there are so many cats end up abandoned.

Your dog is deaf? Wow. How do you train him? Does he respond to any sound? Do you use hand signs? LOL Sorry for all the questions. That's awesome that you kept him, because, yes, I'm sure that a typical person wouldn't want a dog they thought was "defective".

I usually don't have problems--this year cash flow is tight and I'd rather he didn't get me anything than lose sleep about continued use of the credit cards.

Yup! Which is kinda ironic, considering how lovely his ears are - soft as rabbit fur and so very expressive! :)

I trained him with hand signals. He's totally deaf (since birth, most likely - he's got the double recessive gene that also gives him his white fur). Signs and words are all the same to dogs, so it was really easy to teach him. The only problem is that he has to be looking at you to see the sign.

Overall though, it's really nice - he rarely barks and sleeps through the night. Anyone that returns a deaf dog to a shelter is missing out completely! :)

All of my cats have either been shelter cats, or my Maneki, who is my only cat right now, that was found in a tree because (knowing her now) she probably pissed some dog off and got shown.

There are so many animals in shelters who need adoption, and knowing this, it upsets me that people will go out of their way to acquire pets from pet stores. There was a little shelter down by the falls in my home city where hundreds and hundreds of cats were kept in tiny cages, basically one on top of the other, and I didn't know it when I was little, but I'm guessing that they got put down, after a while. I'm glad to say that I saved four of them, but all the rest--it's just so sad.

I was always the soft heart who would grab the runt of the litter. And they always turn out to be the ones with the biggest personalities.

lol I'm the same way. I gravitate toward the one that takes some effort to get to know. That or the one that seems not to like me.

I've fallen in absolute love with a kitten at the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter; she's chilling at PetSmart right now, and I would give my right arm for her.

Alas, we're not sure if now is a great time to bring home a new baby; Nin's been in a fuss lately so I'm sure having another member of the family would put his nose way out of joint.

Best of luck with the writing! And gift lists, ugh. MIL was so adamant, when all I wanted was money. But noooo >.<;;

Cats are so territorial! And they can hate on each other like no one's business. Thankfully we have a large house, so the ugliness is kept to a minimum. I wouldn't have even tried it if we lived in an apartment. Maybe someday Nin will decide he'd like a little feline company :)

I'm planning on getting a cat from a shelter after the new year sometime, so I definitely agree with you on the shelter issue. I'm glad that kitteh found a forever home!

And congrats on the writing! Whoohoo! :D

Yay kitty :) As cute as kittens are, I'd say go for an older, or at least adult, cat. So much more mellow. Kittens are crazy. And destructive.

So what if it sucks?! I'm fucking puking out words on a page! They are words that make sentences and even if those sentences won't pass the smell test, I will take their tattered remains and write Real Sentences! That stand up to scrutiny! They will smell shiny! SHINY

This gets a big smile and thumbs up. Progress is progress and hats off for making some. As anyone will tell you, you can make something into something better. You can only get nothing from nothing.

Just (((((hug)))))) It sounds like you need one. Take care of you, okay?

I'll be so happy when the party is past and I will have more time to devote to only writing. Until then, I'll take the progress I can get ;)
