A few numbers to ponder

Mar 26, 2004 10:43

During the recent 9/11 attacks it is estimated that about 3,000 people died at the world trade center. That's a lot of people, but I just wanted to see how that compared to various other things.

Various other things )

You raise some really good points. It helps that I'm a statistics whore sometimes, and I like these sorts of comparisons. For a less extreme example, go around and ask women what disease is most likely to kill them. While the trend is thankfully reversing, for a while women really, really thought that breast cancer was the Number One Killer Of Women. It isn't, of course -- it's heart disease. So while these women were making sure they got their mammograms every year, they ballooned up in weight and didn't even know that's what was going to get them (with a contribution to mortality a lovely dash of morbidity from type 2 diabetes). You can show people numbers upon numbers, but the flash and bang is what draws their attention.

Heh. Another cool example of what I was talking about. :)

By the way, it's good to hear from you. Now that you've (sort of) brought it up, I would like to see more of your own life and happenings.

You're not missing out on much! School, slacking, sleeping, eating. The usual. =)

I'll avoid flying into my beliefs about 9-11 being sensationalized for political reasons (which it is), because honestly, everybody more or less already knows this ( ... )

That's pretty much how I see it.

Interesting bit about crime. I don't know how many people do this, but before my last move I checked with the local police in the place I was moving to to find out what crime was like there. They directed me to their web site where I got good detailed information as to crime trends, and which types of crime occurred (or at least were reported) how often.

No posts at all for April...is everything okay?

And on an unrelated note, are you up for coming over for a barbecue sometime before too long?
