Sister's visit

May 28, 2007 21:09

I saw "Pirates of the Caribbean 3" with my sister and her husband this weekend. I would give it a C-, with the feeling that I am being generous. Perhaps a D+ would be more appropriate, but I am a charitable man. Normally I review movies and say how much I would have paid to see them. As such, I would have paid... 0.00$ to see "Pirates 3". Of course ( Read more... )

I went to Colonial Willamsburg in maybe the 7th grade. I appreciated it then, but hearing what you had to say, I'm saddened that my memory is false. I suppose memories are frequently that way.

Glad you had a nice visit with your sister. I liked Pirates....

Awww... don't let me ruin your nostalgia. It probably is pretty cool for a 7th grader / younger person (this was one of the things we discussed). It's just that, being the cynic academics that we are, Colonial Williamsburg just didn't do it for us.

Haha. You're allowed to like Pirates :-P I had an "argument" with one of my friends about it (you know, the kind of friend where you can argue anything, because you both realize going in that the argument doesn't actually matter. He and I do that with a lot of things).

I'll agree with you, Charles, even if our tastes in movies aren't especially aligned. Pirates 3 didn't do it for me either. I liked Pirates 2 mostly for the super-awesome waterwheel fight scene that ended up involving almost every character (and I thought it was kind of funny). This one didn't have those elements, and most of the humor that they went for either missed, or was played out.

I only saw a couple of the Harry Potter movies (and haven't read the books) but it almost reminded me of what the movies could have been like if they hadn't made the effort to NOT include everything done in the book. I guess this goes with the detail thing you mentioned.

However, the "well-placed ropes" on giant-Calypso? Unintentional PG-13 comedy cold.

The last scene (after the credits) brought it from a C- to a C+ in my mind.

I so didn't get the ropes. Cause, you know, as she was getting bigger, I thought "mmm... the ropes should be staying the same size... uh oh...". But, somehow the ropes multiplied or grew? Even with the pirates still holding them? It just confused me.

I only saw the last scene last night. We hightailed it out of there once the movie was finished. While it does make the movie slightly better, I am uncomfortable with giving it higher than a C-, or, really, even a D+.
