You almost made me cry.
This morning conversation was so spot on. And it's good and painful at the same time.
Kirsten realizing the mistakes she made in the past and actually voicing them. The mixed feeling of treasuring Ryan's smiles and feeling the jealousy.
The way Ryan always talks about Kirsten and Seth and never includes himself in this mother-son bond is pretty obvious as well.
And it makes me sad, because as much as I want Ryan to reconnect with the Harts and having this special cherished feeling, I also wish he would get this feeling from the Cohen's and accept Sandy and Kirsten as his parents.
And with the chance of the Harts moving to Berkeley with Ryan about to study there I get Kirsten's fear of losing him for good to them.

Sorry for not giving a decent feedback to the chapter before.

I ♥ this story. Thanks for updating.

I'm happy to see you are still reading. Never worry about reviewing, but I do love to see your comments! Thank you -- I'm glad you are still enjoying.

On the show, Ryan clearly thinks of Sandy as his dad. As for Kirsten? I don't think the Ryan/Kirsten relationship is anywhere near as close as Sandy/Ryan. Canon Kirsten makes me cry. (Wish some of our flist had been allowed to write her character on the show.)

::sniffles:: Absolutely lovely fic,
I just read seventeen and then this
and I'm in love with this fic.

All the things the Cohens should
have been, biting them in the
butt, very poignant.

Many thanks.

So I continue to hate the Harts and feel sympathy for Kirsten. Perfect? no. Misguided? Yes. Tried? Yup. The Harts shouldn't highlight all her wrongdoings. No mom is perfect.

I wonder if what you hate could be having Canon Kirsten's shortcomings highlighted, rather than the Harts? Your call, in the end. I just raise the question for your consideration.

Canon Kirsten breaks my heart. (You write her so much more sympathetically than the writers on the show ever did. So do so many of our flisters. Even here, she talks to Ryan about things she never broached in canon. From little things like the pool house to huge things like her addiction...)

Kirsten is her own biggest critic in this story -- she knows where she's failed. Where her weaknesses are... and every one is taken straight from what we saw in canon.

You're so diplomatic. Even as I typed, I knew that it was that the Harts made Kirsten's faults so apparent. I do write Kirsten more sympathetically. I write her as I think the show wanted to write her, but for whatever reason couldn't get themselves together in doing it!

What really hurts is that the series is over, and the show never got it right. There are no second chances. Canon Kirsten remains forever a shadow of what I imagine they must have wanted her to be.

Oh, cool - I love famous.
I read the comments after reading all three parts, hoping that I wasn't the only one who didn't like the Harts because, well, they're not the Cohens!
pffew - nice to know I'm not the only one who feels so sad right now for Kirsten, and in a large part, I really feel bad for Ryan. Just so sad that he doesn't include himself in with Seth and Kirsten.

Interesting. I feel sorry for Canon Kirsten, too, but I feel sorrier for Ryan and what he never gets. (Luckily, he's never expected much and he has Sandy.)

My heart aches right along with Kirsten's. I don't know if it came so much from canon as it did fanfic, but Kirsten does love Ryan and IS his mother...but in canon there is no Megan. On the other hand, even in this fic, Kirsen didn't know there was a Megan so she didn't have any competition before they showed up. What I'm trying to say (badly) is that I'm still in Kirsten's corner b/c although the Harts were there at a crucial time(s) for Ryan, Kirsten literally took him in and finished raising him.

I realize I am irrationally trying to protect a fictional character from another fictional character...but I read the other comments and know it's not just me....so I have to think that you want us all to feel this in some small way, because your words are never incidental.

These are a few lines I found noteworthy:
Ryan’s words are like the tips of icebergs - so much of what he says lies buried deep beneath their surface. -- so very true. Nice observation.

Cards (but no photographs) from his bris. -- ok, this? Just plain funny

I'm stuck on the word 'like'. Isn't this what the whole story is about? Shouldn't he BE a son to Kirsten, not just like one? Ah... he should be. I guess the question really is, is that the way Canon Kirsten treats him? All fanfic aside?

Thanks so much for your review!

My answer would be that sometimes Canon Kirsten talks the talk....but she doesn't really walk the walk.

I couldn't agree more, unfortunately. *sigh* So very, very sad...
