My first thought about Ryan being emotionally unwell was Duh! He had his GF OD, be held captive by a gun-wielding lunatic, turn lesbian, almost raped, shoot his brother, watch her new guy-pal die while Ryan tried to save him, take up with the Nazi surfer....and then die herself. And his mom and brother moved out of state, his dad returned still an asshole, IMHO. None of this was his doing, but how many kids have all this crap by the time they are 18! And with Marissa at least, Ryan signed up for the job himself ( ... )

Of course the Oliver moments made me scream at my TV. And every time a character wanted Ryan to "BOND" with a family member....some of them should have been institutionalized, not bonded with! Like Kirsten freaking pushed Ryan to Theresa and to Dawn. Kirsten and Taylor wanted Ryan to make nice with Frank. So many wrongs here.
We did such a better job of writing the characters in fanfic than TPTB did. And yes, they dropped the ball repeatedly with the parenting.
that someone would insist that he get some therapy and start addressing his self-worth issues and assorted demons, rather than continuing to ignore or bury them OMG yes! But I'm guessing that the population as a whole has a thing against therapy.
And again, ITA.
And yes, I'm sure much of it was so that we could dance on to the oh-so-deeply-moving teen romances, which sadly became priorty one with TPTB. Gag And didn't you want to ( ... )

I still hate those Harts.... I want to punch him everytime he calls Ryan Ace. And checking up on other peoples pool house safeties... god, keep ur nose out of things that are none of ur business... U totally write them in character.... i hate them, which makes the story so great.... they are too nice, to budding... well I just dont like people like that and they seem to be too attached to him, like almost in a creepy -stealing babies- kind of way
I really hope that he is going to chose the Cohens in the end.

I like the conversation between Ryan and Megan, she is sensible enough to let him talk and holds back on some comments she probably wants to make.
I'm not so sure about the checking out the pool house. Yes, Sam can make a suggestion and can show his concerns, but this is really not his responsibility. Even if he is a good friend of Ryan, but he is still a stranger to the Cohens. So I'm with Ryan here on the "diplomatic" approach.
(BTW I always thought Sandy and Kirsten should have moved him out of this thing, even when he is a teenager and loves his freedom, that's beside the point here)
Now I would wish that Ryan and the Harts enjoy their trip and that they together explore Berkley.
(Even when deep down in my heart I wished that he would do this with the Cohens.)
Thanks again for a wonderful update.

The issue with the pool house? The Cohens don't seem to have taken it on as their responsibility. We saw how it shattered in a thousand shards of glass -- if Ryan had been sleeping there that night, he couldn't have survived. Scary stuff...
Diplomatic is absolutely crucial, but so is making sure Ryan isn't sleeping inside a death-trap.
(And I totally am with you on the moving Ryan inside the house thing. It wasn't convenient for purposes of the show, but it should have been done. the writers could have figured out other ways to use the pool house effectively as a set.)
Thanks again.

I'm glad this got you back in a good mood, and I hope that good mood has continued.
I know it's easy to get defensive with respect to the Cohens. I do, too, when I think of our fanfic Cohens. However, if I only look at Canon Cohens, I find myself troubled and disappointed in their neglect and lack of parenting more often than I care to think about.
Fanfic Cohens are so much more defensible, I think, than are the actual canon Cohens. Sadly, the writers didn't give us a lot of good Cohen parenting after Season One. We got a moment here and there, but the focus on the teen romance left little time to focus on the family relationships.
Thanks for reading, and keeping as open a mind as you can, given our years of cheering for the Cohens + 1! (And in fanfic I, too, think they're great!)
