Cheese

Oct 14, 2011 03:10

I'm fairly new to being vegan and I'm trying not to give in to my cravings for cheese.

Is there anything that actually tastes like REAL cheese and it isn't made with mustard/seed/powder or chemicals????

Open to making it myself or buying it and I no longer care about the cost.

Thanks!

I made a post just like this several months ago... I got lots of responses but I didn't find anything satisfying.

Since then, I've heard of something called Nacheez... it's supposed to be exactly like the melty nacho cheese stuff. Haven't tried it myself.

Check out recipes for cashew cheese recipes. Many are very good, especially for spreads and dips! Kind of cheddary. Pine nuts thrown in make them parmaseany. Macadamia based recipes I've tried were a lot like brie and other soft cheeses.

Chances are you're not missing the taste as much as the Casein. For me it just was difficult for some time until my body mostly forgot about it. It actually helped not to eat too many cheese "alternatives" and just stay clear, but that might have been me.

This. I avoided all cheese replacements until I stopped craving it. Now I use daiya if I need a little melty something to hold my dish together (quesadillas etc.) it tasted a little funny to me at first so I only used a little bit but I've been able to up the quantity of daiya slowly and love it now. My picky 8-year-oild brother even loves daiya (but he's never had real cheese - anaphylactic reaction to dairy).

Yup. I was going to say this. I seriously had to not eat anything cheese-like for something like six months. And then I tried the cheese replacements, and they were good.

Like another poster said, it might not be the cheese so much as the casein, which is addictive and produces an opiate-like effect (and thus why a lot of fast food smothers their food in it). You could always look up a few recipes for cashew-derived cheese if you want that flavor, though it miiiiiight not be a bad idea to avoid anything like that altogether until your body no longer craves the casein.

there really isn't anything that tastes just like cheese. i agree with the others who said they took a break from anything cheesy until they stopped craving it. i tried some cheese substitutes at first and was repulsed by them because i could still remember exactly what cheese tasted like. once i got used to eating other foods, i introduced the occasional cheese substitute (i agree that daiya is the best) but i don't even really want it much anymore.
