Why is it that we Westerners have such a major issue with the consumption of cat and dog, yet we find the consumption of cow, chicken, and pig to be completely acceptable? Is it because that cats and dogs have been domesticated as pets in the West for so long that the very thought has become abhorrent? I'd like to hear other opinions on this. Here' ( Read more... )

i would say you touch on my reason, but don't go far enough. most americans love their pets like children. the companionship they provide inspires real love and most of us who give that love get real love back(yeah, i know this is not provable, but it is experience-able). the thought of eating a cat or dog makes me think first of relationship - the potential love that animal could give being destroyed. it FEELS as repugnant as cannibalism to me.

not even close. in fact i have dreams of raising hutch rabbits and chickens for meat. i want to learn to hunt and butcher my own deer (probably not for regular practice). but i am free-range only. i'm cool with animals dying so that i can eat them, but i'm not cool with them being tortured so that i can eat them.

So, free range dogs or cats you wouldn't have as much of an issue with?

I'm fairly adventurous, but I wouldn't eat dog or cat. Guinea pig, horse, or wild game I would have no problem trying, but not dogs and cats.

Besides, I thought I heard that the meat from carnivorous animals wasn't very good tasting anyway.

I'd try dog before I'd eat brussel sprouts, but in general I'm not eating something I can train to hunt food for me
