It's not technically 'projection' when someone who's overweight himself calls someone else fat. Projection is the attribution of one's own thoughts and feelings to another person - like suspecting one's innocent mate of infidelity to cover one's guilt about an affair. It wouldn't be 'projection' if one's mate WAS being unfaithful. By the same token, whether or not the jerks have body-image 'issues' of their own, they're not calling you fat because they're erroneously attributing their own feelings to you. Sounds more like plain old bullying: correctly identifying your vulnerable emotional areas and poking them with a stick.
If you're getting a *lot* of comments about looking fat in your costumes, it's likely because you're choosing characters whose body-types are too different from your own. Some characters, nobody will ever match their body-type - women come in all the shapes and sizes that real women can be, but not in all the shapes and sizes it'
