The Melancholy of ...Me!!

Seriously, I've given this show a fair chance. I really have. But I can't understand what the appeal of Haruhi Suzumiya is. I know a lot of my friends really enjoy it, but to me it's nothing more than "Selfish bitch, the anime". I know she's god, or whatever, and if she gets bored the universe stops functioning so she HAS to be selfish. But to that ( Read more... )

I watched it for a bit, and I ended up stopping cause I just didn't really like it. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and from what I'd see, there wasn't much of a point to it. If after 9 episodes there really isn't much story, I'm not gonna keep watching.

right! And forcing myself to keep watching a show isn't my idea of enjoyment :/

For example, I didn't watch firefly for a long time even with all the nagign to watch it. When I finally watched it, within 15 minutes I began my day long marathon and finished it all. Needs to grab you!

Yeap, there are far better shows out there with great stories and characters to be wasting one's time with "Selfish Bitch: The Anime" honestly.

I watched the show, I thought it was alright, not omfg epic or anything. I read that article, and I feel that it's less about "female empowerment" than about getting what you want. Some people watching might see it from the point of view of "Wow, wouldn't it be nice to do whatever you want whenever you want" as opposed to seeing it from the outer perspective of "Wow, what a selfish bitch". People unconsciously (or consciously....) placing themselves in the role of main characters (harlequin romance D:) and whatnot. Of course, then again, that suggests that many otaku are imagining that they are god....

Heh yeah I think that's a pretty good summary. I can see most people wanting to be gods themselves, but I just don't enjoy watching someone get their way all the time.

To me, it'd be like watching Charlie & the Chocolate factory and seeing Veruca Salt get the golden goose, the factory, & all the OOmpa Loompas as slaves in one feel swoop because she was rich and could.

I'm really glad to see other people saying this. I didn't understand the appeal of the show at all, and no, showing the episodes out of chronological order does NOT make a "smart" show. It's still another mind numbing, stereotypical-character filled anime.

That's pretty much the reason i watched it, still need to watch the movie (taking my time). Other then just watching it cause I can, i really don't see the appeal or why it's so popular. Well, maybe not, immature anime fans who think the world revolves around them will probably relate to Haruhi a lot more and like it because of that. the animation is a little better then most of the stuff that's come out so that could also be appealing.

Selfish bitch, the anime

That's probably what it should have translated to.
